William Langers original daunting task - use a single volume encyclopedia that you will find the standard reference volume for historians - was admirably fulfilled in past editions. This sixth edition, with Peter Stearn and the team of scholars of unquestioned authority, continues the tradition. For the layman, this book provides a remarkable brevity and depth. Often in just two or three pages entire significant periods or trends are covered thoroughly. There are rare factual errors, as may be the case with any encyclopedic work, but this new edition still delivers probably the most exhaustive reference while using least errors. For those who love dates and places, people and trends, this really is an invaluable reference. For those who hate such details but must ensure that is stays around for work or school, that is still the very best single volume encyclopedia available. The CD-ROM is painless to set up. The integration into MS Word is simply mildly quirky - for some terms the specified reference information arises within seconds and it is reasonably relevant. David R. The 1972 Langer was THE standard reference for history students, as I ws for six numerous years of graduate school. It bailed me out numerous times. It parallels the value from the CRC for chemistry students or perhaps the OED for scholars in the English language. This splendid revision and updating belongs within the collection of anyone wanting an expedient, convenient reference to any or all phases of history. It has splendid essays that construct the basics in several fields, like art, math, science, and culture. It should not are the last word using a topic, which you may get from poking through, or visitng check your local library. The CD-ROM is usually a dream, as well as the maps printed out fine, whilst they are just a plan of say, the partition of Africa. As for Lindbergh, whole body was perpetuated on the 1972 book, but which will not detract through the overwhelmingly excellent job. Any general reference work that cites my obscure dissertation hero, even thought it can be spelled inside English and never the Polish style, is really remarkable!

Not with, however for looking up details while reading other materials or quick confirmation of background information that comes up in discussion or newspaper/magazine articles or perhaps historical details encountered in literature. There is almost no detail, but every little thing gets a mention which enable it to be put in context of other world events. This book was incredibly detailed. If you wish a with each coming year reference, this can be for you. However, we needed a household general history encyclepedia this also wasnt that. Also, i thought this was organized through the year instead of by major events or people. This may be described as a plus for most but hasn't been what we needed.

The best benefit about this book will be the CD that provide it. Anytime I find someone or something like that I don't realize much about, I just type it in and have all related entries. Very quick and smooth - like wikipedia but a lot more thorough and reliable. There are reportedly some inaccuracies in it, though every page stuffed with historical details, high being 1000 pages, you can likely a few mistakes, but I were not let down up to now in my use of the usb ports. Enjoy!

This volume is extremely handsome-beautifully typeset. And the illustrations are nicely done, too. However, the primary person I researched, Charles A. Lindbergh, revealed a blunder. At the bottom with the first column onpage 729, the entire year for CALs flight emerges as 1925, not 1927 since it should be. It is correctly noted onpage 428. Needless to say, finding this sort of significant error right away after opening the publication has made me more over a little untrusting in the books other dates and facts. Buyer beware.

Roger S. Bagnall is Professor of Ancient History and Director with the Institute with the Study on the Ancient World at New York University. Before joining the NYU faculty in 2007, he was Jay Professor of Greek and Latin and Professor of History at Columbia University, where he previously taught for 33 years. During that time he served as Dean in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Chair on the Department of Classics. He specializes from the social and economic reputation of Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique Egypt. Among his best-known works are Egypt in Late Antiquity 1993, The Demography of Roman Egypt 1994; with Bruce Frier, and Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History 1995.
Kai Brodersen is chair of Ancient History on the University of Mannheim and president-elect in the University of Erfurt in Germany. He has labored on Greek and Roman historiography and geography, inscriptions, oracles and wonder-texts, on economic history, and for the reception with the classical world.
Craige B. Champion received his graduate education in Classics and Ancient History at Princeton University. He is Associate Professor of Ancient History and Classics inside the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and former Chair in the History Department at Syracuse University. He has published widely on ancient Greek and Roman background historiography. He could be the author of Cultural Politics in Polybius s Histories 2004 and editor of Roman Imperialism: Readings and Sources Blackwell, 2004.
Andrew Erskine studied for his undergraduate degree and doctorate at New College Oxford. He has subsequently worked inside the universities of Birmingham, Swansea, and University College Dublin. In 1997-98 he held an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship with the University of Munich. He held the chair of Classics in the National University of Ireland Galway until his arrival for the University of Edinburgh in January 2005. He is currently head of Classics.
Sabine R. Huebner is Privatdozentin of Ancient History at Freie Universit t Berlin. She has published within the social and religious history on the Roman and then Roman East, on brother-sister marriage in Roman Egypt, final years in Classical Greece, Greek epigraphy, and papyrology. Her work incorporate a monograph, Der Klerus in der Gesellschaft des sp tantiken Kleinasiens 2005, a co-edited volume, Growing up Fatherless in Antiquity 2008, plus a forthcoming study on Intergenerational Equity and Family Strategies from the Hellenistic and Roman East 2009.
