I have owned or caused FileMaker Pro 6, 8, 9 now 12 for upwards of 10 years. Its nice program with plenty of flexibility and power. Compared to older versions, while using the likes of Inspector, which present in 11, makes making layouts very simple.
If you happen to be using Lion or Mountain Lion for Mac, any version over 11 wouldn't normally work on your laptop. I experienced a database I containing Omnis software. I really wouldn't want the fee for upgrading Omnis and prefered Filemaker Pro. I knew a decent amount about DB concepts but nothing about how exactly Filemaker works as well as interface.

We are already using FMP running our business for since version1. It very seldom does, even so only on the single user since FM9. It auto-saves every time you click beyond a record, so only the latest entry is lost put a commit button in to perform a quick manual save as needed. The server makes backups every half an hour of my most significant data, therefore the most lost will be 30 minutes at work. I have 14 users running off just one mac mini server. There are 34 databases, with multiple tables, the principle database having over 200 layouts, 21 tables and more than 1200 fields.
