5.0 outside of 5 stars FineReader 5.0 beats Omnipage 11 and Textbridge 2k
By ScanMan on July 12, 2001
I scan books which are in the public domain, the demanding job for OCR software. The bottom line is that this Abbyy FineReader Pro v5.0 is THE BEST OCR software out there right now. It far surpasses Scansofts Textbridge Millennium. The only thing that even gives FineReader Pro 5.0 any levels of competition are Scansofts OmniPage Pro 11, but FineReader continues to be far better. Since Scansoft bought out Textbridge from Xerox and bought out OmniPage from Caere, you would think they are able to develop a superior product, but this isn't so. Omnipage looks like it's billed as a possible upgrade to Textbridge Im guessing that Scansoft is sending Textbridge on the graveyard. Scansoft claims in a advertisement they spent a YEAR combining the programs. However, Scansoft failed to even include rudimentary options that come with Textbridge in OmniPage 11. For instance, should you scan the sunday paper two pages at the same time with the binding flat resistant to the scanner this is common for older books that require to remain intact, Textbridge Millennium could split apart all pages using a dual-page mode. This was an useful if not critical feature for scanning books. However, this feature doesn't exist in OmniPage 11. FineReader alternatively, are able to do this plus more. It works great with Auto Document Feeders and it's far more accurate than OmniPage 11. Finally, FineReaders error/dictionary with spell checker is once more far finer quality than OmniPage 11. The only single advantage that OmniPage 11 has over FineReader 5.0 is which it can import Adobe PDF documents for even more OCR work. Otherwise FineReader Pro 5.0 would be the way to go.
Also, regarding an early review, FineReader means that you can exclude optional-hyphens inside the output file. Check inside the advanced portion of the output format. Including them just isn't a mistake. Its actually quite impressive that this program knows those which can be optional-hyphens and those which can be not.

I bought this rather then an upgrade for my old Omnipage, with the reviews I read here. Bad mistake! It comes through an odd-ball install program that incorporates both a floppy disk plus a CD. It was impossible to fit the program in the floppy disk, as the floppy-disk install program crashed my system each and every time I tried. The manufacturer would not respond to my email get assistance.
It was possible to fit from the CD, but that installation is perfect for a trial period only, after which this system presumably goes dormant soon you re-purchase it.
I returned the application for a refund of my cost.

Not a condition I use too frequently, but prior to my practical Abbyys FineReader 5.0 Pro I was always of the opinion that OCR software was obviously a joke; a judgment bolstered by mine yet others experience of applications like Text-Bridge. Not FineReader. This stuff is in their ability to convert scanned documents into text files that may then be formatted as part of your word-processor. With FineReader 5.0 Pro I can perform what would take me on the week - assuming I didnt go loopy within the process of transcribing it - in less than an hour; converting about 20, 000.00 words worth, to a useable MS-Word or RTF file.
FineReader makes few mistakes. Some worth mentioning will be the following:
Text hyphenated to be able to allow anything to wrap from the original: This will give word splits with optional-hyphen symbols which will have to obtained individually within your word-processor file.
Quotation marks will default to text-editor style without left and right handing: This is usually corrected globally in the given document by in MS- Word while using the replace all function and entering the traditional quotation marks inside the find and replace boxes. This applies to both single and double quotes.
Text emerge columns with cross-column footnotes can create a line or a couple of rubbish, though the columns are going to be successfully interpreted being a single one with your word-processor document, delivering remember to save lots of the processed file with no formatting. I reckon you need to save all processed files without retaining an original formatting to generate life easier.
You may output a processed file like a PDF with an HTML page. Be sure to take into account the settings for these particular export options, or maybe you can get an enormous PDF or even an HTML page that wont are employed in older browsers.
I would also encourage a person to dispense with every one of the Wizard toolbars and obtain familiar while using commands through the menu bar. This is usually a better plus much more flexible approach to work, and potentially less confusing. And buy a good scanner, too. Epson do fair ones such as their perfection series.
If you desire an OCR application that actually works, get FineReader 5.0 Pro. Youll recoup its incredibly modest cost a single job.

After doing your research the Internet for home elevators affordable PC desktop OCR products, it seemed clear if you ask me that Abbyys FineReader 5.0 Pro was possibly the best product for me. I have not been disappointed. I read plenty of negative press about OCR capabilities normally and I wasn't impressed by the OCR software bundled with my Canon 620P Scanner. You should also do not forget that this was my first exposure to any kind of OCR software.
My immediate requirement were to translate a five year-old, 57 page document to MS Word, then it could be updated. The source document was lost sometime inside past. As a consequence, nobody was thinking about starting from scratch to update the document. The survivng hardcopy from the document was manufactured by a laser printer in monochrome on 8 1/2 by 11 plain paper. The content was made up of text, logos, graphics, and also a number of simple tables.
It required approximately 2.5 hours to scan the full document and approximately 2 days, fulltime, to accomplish the project. This time estimate includes time to get familiar together with the program.
Without counting the total quantity of words from the document, I would estimate that FineReader was 99% accurate translating the written text. The only stick it had any issue was in procesing some in the section header numbers inside the table of contents TOC. For exampe, this system translated the picture 8.x to.x in a number of instances plus confused Is and 1s repeatedly. Given the italicized font from the characters images plus the errors are really easy to understand. The few errors I did find were quickly identified and easily corrected manually in MS Word.
Tables took a tad bit more manual work. FineReaders layout analysis logic had no problem identifying all on the tables, but, as noted within the software documentation, this program may not always be able to convert table cells with multiple lines of text and preserve the table row and column alignment with the orignal document. In my case, these issues were all to easy to fix while using column and row identifier tool provided inside the software. Once I marked the placement of rows and columns for the scanned image from the table, the tables were translated correctly, requiring only minor editing touch-around align text in table cells to match an original document.
The only problem I have encountered with this particular software product was the result in the distribution package I received. Abbyy provides a try and buy distribution that is made 3.5 floppy diskette as well as a CD-ROM. The combination of media provides copy protection and is just not problem unless, much like me, you do have a laptop PC that may support sometimes a CD-ROM or maybe a 3.5 floppy diskette, however, not both as well. In short, I called Abbyys tech support team line plus they told to come back the floppy diskette and CD-ROM to them and they also would send me a single CD-ROM. I isntalled and used misused CD-ROM I received in the vendor without the need of further problems.
The message is that you must make sure you realize which distribution of the software program you are purchasing. The box did state, within the system requirements section, which the program required a 3.5 diskette along with a CD-ROM drive. I would not deduce, however, that both devices were required concurrently.
The manual that had my distribution was entirely adequate for my purposes, suffering only on the occasional grammatical problem common to many manuals for products coded in countries where English isn't native language. FineReader originated by Abbyy, a Russian company with headquarters in Moscow.
I am a highly skilled computer user and typically purchase a new software product and attempt to use it immediately without bothering you just read the documentation. I believe you might have this approach with FineReader, but I recommend reading the documentation first, particularly, if, just like me, you are certainly not familiar with all the basic flow from the OCR process. The manual isnt that long so you probably wont need you just read all than it, to get enough information to starting using FineReader productively.
Because I am not a skilled OCR user, I am not wanting to say that the product will meet the requirements of everyone or every job. I was delighted, however, using what the product could do personally. As I said at the start of my comments, I wasn't disappointed by Abbyys FineReader 5.0 Pro.

About a few years ago, I had an image of converting all of my magazine clippings along with other research material to digital form thus it would occupy less room and stay easier to find and consult. It took at period of time to find the hardware and software to convert from vision to reality and OCR was the most difficult part. FineReader would be the only OCR package that might fill the balance, and Ive tried them! Compared to earlier versions, FR 5 is a bit more stable, more capable on difficult scans, and even more flexible rolling around in its features. On ordinary-hard material it's going to do the whole thing without intervention sufficient reason for good accuracy. When the scan copy is very poor or exceptionally complex, or once the ultimate in accuracy is very important, then some hand editing in the recognition blocks and/or hand correction from the results is necessary - - but FR 5 causes it to be as easy as possible. I do many scanning of statistical data in tables as well as abilities due to this are truly amazing.
For my purposes I have to save the output with a PDF file, and until OmniPage 11 costlier and not nearly as good as FR, FR was the only real consumer-oriented package that could do this in a single step. Its an enormous advantage.
Limitations? There are some: It loses my HP 6250 USB scanner sometimes which might be a problem within the scanner end, needless to say. Theres no treating how much it compresses images - - a lot of for good quality. Its capability to handle equations is quite limited. It has issues with old-style non-lining numerals. If it mistakenly recognizes something as numerical it wont permit you to correct it to alphabetical or the opposite way round. Theres no approach to force it to realize everything in a very block as numerical as could be helpful sometimes for tables. Its a lttle bit slower than FR 4 due, I presume, to newer recognition algorithms. The user-interface is reasonably complicated until you simply use the motor car modes - - but at most is necessary with this very powerful package using its many options. While Id want to see ABBYY work towards all these areas, Im absolutely convinced how they are the one people who have any idea how to generate an OCR package fit for adults. If you may need OCR, you would like FineReader 5.0.

Unlike most OCR programs this works. Toss from the bundled OCR software that was included with your scanner. It only offers you an opportunity to practice your typing skills. FineReader 5.0 Recognizes and learns looking at the mistakes.
And it doesnt cost nearly what a few other, less capable programs do.
One it can do have some difficulties with Windows XP. There is usually a 22meg service pack available through the publishers US website in addition to a registry hack to produce it behave. I have used it successfully with Win98SE, WinME, and XP though.

Compared to your American-produced products I have seen inside the past, that is a major breakthrough. Very high accuracy in the wide range of languages. My only beefs are two: that it could well be nice to get a feature to help you to deal with double-sided pages fed by using an automatic document feeder, and, that it could well be nice so as to output instantly to WordPerfect as well as perhaps some dtp programs. Otherwise, tough to see how it might get greater.

I bought Scansoft Textbridge Pro Millennium at the physical store and was REALLY dissatisfied together with the results of even simple scans. It was certainly NO greater than the Presto PageManager 98 that had my Epson 1200U scanner. THEN I went and focus the reviews on the product here on Amazon. OOPS! I would do not have purchased it if Id look at the reviews here first! When will I be able to check Amazon before I buy anything? Fortunately, the publisher consented to accept a return.
Then I purchased ABBY FineReader 5.0 from Amazon. Well, the differences between it and Textbridge were ASTOUNDING! In side-by-side tests of your scanned newspaper article, FineReader reproduced it perfectly just as one MS Word file. Textbridges OCR engine produced jumbled mess of computer all.

Ive owned several unique OCR programs ever since the inception of OCR, Abbyy FineReader 5.0 Pro OCR would be the best one Ive ever used. I utilize it for reading both English and Greek, it's flawless. It is especially effective in reading flawlessly small fonts Ive tested it on 8 pt. and newspaper articles. I can copy dual pages from books, and it is going to automatically format them in portrait, again flawlessly. This may be the first OCR software Ive had that will need only minor editing only format, never extra wierd characters. I suspect the good price is because v.6 is now being released.

Ive been using FineReader Pro 5.0 for just a week and Im really pleased using the excellent job it can do. My most significant need ended up being to scan grainy pages-printouts of microfilm pages. These pages are scarred with scratches and blobs. FR does an incredible job of interpreting the written text accurately. It tells you where it's guessed, and it also guesses right inside great majority of cases. It also highlights where guessing isn't feasible and lets me correct the writing while looking for a blowup in the problem area. This saves me from needing to locate the problem around the paper original.
Another useful feature: the capacity to scan the paper sideways and rotate it inside FR.
All things considered, an exceptionally effective tool that has the job done. Its not easy to imagine software that would perform the trick better.
One minor quibble, since there is nothing perfect. There are discrepancies between printed manual and it. For example, the manual shows the block cutting tool like a button for the interface. In fact, its in a single of the drop-down menus.

Complicated installation: The installation process due to this app was long plus a bit confusing. There were multiple steps, and instructions werent always clear in what to do next. There would be a Help manual, which explained things clearly, but it really didnt appear to be it should be needed to consult the Help document only to open the app. Installation also took nearly 15 minutes to try and do.
Frequent mistakes: Even in the very basic page of the document, there was still several errors, many involving letters being substituted for numbers. These gave the impression to happen if the font was slightly different in some areas, and however some errors are understandable and expected, it doesnt bode well for your results of this recognition technology focusing on more complex documents.

Significantly improved accuracy for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
Has trouble distinguishing text from pictures.
Not efficient at recognizing font type or size.
Inability to find out its repeat errors.
Inability in order to save multiple pages of any document.
This product sucks! It is barley a pace above some on the free OCR software on the market. I wouldnt pay any amount of money with this. I spent much time correcting its page analysis with errors on every page it analyzed. Upon saving the recognized documents that had been still stuffed with text errors the application would only allow 1 page to get saved each time and kept seeking to overwrite previously saved pages. I wouldnt recommend many to anybody, especially not just a business professional.
A little pricy but thinking about all of the effort you will lay aside, it may be still a great investment.
My daily work requires processing many scanned documents and PDFs. Most in the documents are English however, many have more languages. FineReader may be the first OCR I found without having problem to process these multilingual documents. Some OCR can process bilingual, like English Chinese, but have troubles to see more than 2 languages English Chinese Spanish, by way of example.
The software works well on tables. It is basically easy to me to export the table data to your spreadsheet and without to invest hours of my own time edit them? I meant plenty of tables with data!
The thing of Fine Reader is its interface. A lot of OCR I had been used inside the past have very complicated interface and settings. I consider myself is really a pro yet still need?warm-up? time. When I first tried Fine Reader, I was very impressed how automatically it designed. Very easy to use product.
