Folder Lock 7 locks, hides, and password-protects files and folders with your PC, it encrypts files and email attachments, takes secure backups, protects USB and CD drives, and makes wallets which could store plastic card numbers as well as other sensitive private information. It thwarts hackers by logging and acting upon multiple failed log-in attempts, while a hotkey-activated stealth mode keeps out snoops. Folder Lock costs nothing to try for four weeks.
Master Password option: In addition to rating Password strength, Folder Lock 7 can obtain the Master Password to the Lock Files feature only, as an alternative to for every feature.
Make Wallets: The Make Wallets tool creates secure data containers that could store and encrypt passwords, banks, debit card numbers, plus more.
Xtras: The Xtras menu holds Shred Files and Clean History tools. The Shred Settings around the Settings menu sets the default shredding action and will exclude locked and program files from shredding.
Secure backup: Dont get us wrong - - were all and only the Secure Backup tools end-to-end encryption, real-time data sync, and automatic backup of files put into Lockers. But you should sign up for a merchant account to use it, that may entail subscription fees down the line, and it is not a replace a full system backup.
Folder Lock 7s chance to secure your privacy and data reliably and without fuss may possibly be enough to justify its reasonable cost versus similar freeware, but extras like encryption and secure data wallets have the difference.

Data security with complete excellence.
No cons, not complain.
It is great software to work with, give complete security to everyone my business related records. Really very valuable.
Good software, but Master Password is really a weak side.
Master Password is usually hacked.
No biometric compatibility.
I trust others that it must be one on the best encryption software. But 40 for such limited software package? NO.
There is not any problem with encryption, although the software uses Master Password which could be hacked.
As a Data Security expert I would suggest make use of only biometric encryption - it really is much stronger and you also do not must remember your passcode. There is just a few software offering: IdentaMaster, mybiodentity plus some free SDKs.
Military grade encryption within a click personally.
The software doesn't require any sort of expertise in computing. The software is quite user friendly, at precisely the same time it can be completely trustworthy. I am delighted using the fact that I can make the most sophisticated encryption right away with just a click.
I just like the way it performs, it offers a superior me security effortlessly.
I am content with its performance, I dont use whatever cons.
I wished to protect our photos saved in this little laptop. I have seen several incidents of web data theft and I was quite scared of it. I have tried a large number of software before attempting Folder Lock. I didnt find such smooth functionality in a other software. I love the best way this software works. Very happy featuring its performance!
It seems this application can be quite sensitive to any changes you will be making to your laptop and reverts back in a trial version. It has reverted to trial mode on my small so many times that I cant rate this application any benefit than 1 star. I are actually given a brand new license number and registration key on several occasions yet it still reverts to trial mode in just a few weeks, even though absolutely no changes are already made to laptop. Support is reasonable and you often get an ordinary email and yes it appears that this emails I send to guide are not read or understood. When it works, it will its job, but I cant recommend this as a result of constant reverting to trial mode.
I cant recommend this application for it repeatedly reverting to trial mode.
Ive been using Folder Lock since version 5, and each now and, the folder lock people launch a fresh version. I heard important things about version 7 so I bought one today. I also got a reduction as I would be a upgrading to your newer version. What I love about FL7 was the proven fact that I could backup my encrypted lockers right from the interface. This would be a badly needed feature, at least personally. It seems the FL everyone has finally realized what their users want. Good with them!
After using true crypt for countless years, its a pity there no more support correctly. However, Folder Lock will be the only viable option, while I were forced to pay for doing this, it turned out worth the 40 bucks I paid. I like the indisputable fact that it gives youre the alternative to encrypt email attachments, I can send my colleague company spreadsheets without worrying concerning the security aspect. I would be a little lost initially because the software had numerous features. But Michelle in CS was obviously a great help. Thanks Michelle

The good: Strong design and Microsoft dont always go together, but they also do in Windows 7. Users usually takes a while for getting used to the modern taskbar and Aero Peek, but theyre a pleasure make use of.
The bad: Performance is hit-or-miss in Windows 7. At the ripe ages of seven, Windows XP still performs better in most categories.
The important thing: Windows 7 is a bit more than what Vista should are already, its where Microsoft necessary to go. How much damage Vista did and whether Windows 7 is plenty for people to finally abandon Windows XP are questions that nobody gets the answers to right this moment.
Deserved or otherwise not, Microsoft had dug itself an excellent, deep, dark hole with Windows Vista. Users demanding that Redmond extend the life span of Windows XP wasnt exactly something they can be proud of, either. Bombarded by complaints and negative press even though the first service pack was launched, the bar ended up set high for Vistas successor: Windows 7. This review is founded on an official copy from the Windows 7 RTM that Microsoft presented to CNET on July 30, 2009.
Luckily for Microsoft, Windows 7 is a lot more than just spin. Its stable, smooth, and highly polished, introducing new graphical features, a fresh taskbar that may compete handily using the Mac OS X dock, and device management and security enhancements which make it both easier to make use of and safer. Importantly, it wont need the hardware upgrades that Vista demanded, partially as the hardware has involved, and partially because Microsoft went to great lengths to create Windows 7 available to as many people as is possible.
Its important to note that this public testing process for Windows 7 involved one limited-availability beta and something release candidate, and constituted what some have known as the largest shareware trial period ever. As buggy and irritating as Vista was, Windows 7 isnt. Instead, it will be the successor to Windows XP that Microsoft wishes Vista have been, last but not least places it on competitive footing for some other major os like OS X and Linux.
Microsoft offers six versions of Windows 7: Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, OEM, and Enterprise. The three versions that Redmond will probably be promoting most heavily are Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate, although Starter also are available to consumers.
Windows 7 will support both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The least requirements with the 32-bit incorporate a 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB available hard-disk space, along with a DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or better driver. 64-bit systems will require no less than a 1 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 20GB of free space on your harddrive, as well as a DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or older driver. A touch-screen monitor must take advantage with the native touch features. Do remember that some users have claimed to get limited success running the Windows 7 beta with lower than 1GB of RAM, but it is not recommended.
Microsoft offers several paths to fit Windows 7. People can buy a different computer using the operating system already installed, upgrade from Windows XP or Vista, or perform a clean install over a computer an individual already owns. The clean installation took us about a half-hour, but that can vary depending on your laptop.
The upgrade procedure is different according to whether youre running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Vista users merely must back up their data before selecting the Upgrade option in the install disc. Both XP Home and XP Pro users will must back up their data, then choose Custom from your install disc. Custom may have the same effect like a clean install, although itll keep your old data in a very folder called Once you choose Custom, youll should select the partition of your hard disk that contains Windows XP, then follow the instructions to penetrate your product key and allow your computer to reboot if required.
If you are not sure if your existing computer can run Windows 7, you are able to download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft.
Although the feel of Windows 7 may appear to be activities like some polish applied liberally towards the Vista Aero theme, make no mistake: This is a complete replacement computer, and even more than just Vista done efficiently. From driver support to multitouch groundwork for that future, from better battery management towards the most easy-to-use interface Microsoft has ever endured, Windows 7 is hardly half-baked.
The initial thing that should stand out may be the new taskbar. This is the most effective improvements Microsoft has made-third-party program dock makers are going to must do some serious innovation when Windows 7 goes public. Besides incorporating the translucent design of Aero, the brand new taskbar might just be even better compared to the Mac OS X dock. It features pinned programs using large, easy-to-see icons. Mouse over one and many types of windows related to that program can be found in preview. Mouse over one of these preview panes to show an X to seal the window. Hover on the preview to show an entire-size preview in the program, or click for the window to make it on the front. Because on the button size, those that have touch screens should still find it especially easy to work with.
Jump lists are another new taskbar improvement which make recently opened documents easier to have to. Right-click or left-click and drag on any program icon pinned towards the taskbar to discover a listing of files that youve recently found in that program. In Internet Explorer, this may show recently visited Web sites, while it doesnt yet seem to figure in Firefox.
If youve noticed the missing Show Desktop icon, thats because its been baked into the taskbar itself. Mouse over to your right corner. Hovering within the Show Desktop box reveals the desktop, then hides it once you mouse away. Click around the box to lessen all your programs.
Resizing programs continues to be simplified and improved through the capability to drag a windows title bar. Drag a course window to your top within your monitor to inflate it to full screen. If you want to function in two windows simultaneously, drag one to your left edge then one to the correct edge of your respective screen, and theyll automatically resize to half the width of one's monitor. Dragging an application away from your top or sides will take it back to its original size. This is an entirely new feature in Windows 7, nevertheless it should prove an easy task to adopt given it mimics and expands around the maximize/restore button that people happen to be resizing windows with since Windows 95.
Theme packages also allow it to be much faster to change the style of Windows 7. From the Control Panel, you'll be able to change the theme under Appearance and Personalization. Microsoft has generated several theme packages to give people an idea for what the feature is capable of doing. Click on you to definitely download it, plus it instantly changes the colour scheme and background-no should reboot. Users can make their own themes, likewise.
One with the biggest latest features makes Windows Media Player useful again: you'll be able to now stream media files from Windows 7 computer to an alternative, along the Internet and outside of network. Even better, the setup procedure is dead simple.
When you open Windows Media Player, theres a whole new Stream option about the toolbar. Click it, and youre assigned two choices. Both require someone to associate your pc with your free Windows Live ID. When youve associated an additional Windows 7s WMP with this same ID, you are able to remotely access the media about the host computer. Windows Media Players mini mode looks much slicker, emphasizing the album art-sometimes in the expense of clearly seeing the controls, however its a definite improvement.
The new Device Stage makes managing peripherals significantly easier, combining printers, phones, and portable media players into one window. A large photo on the peripheral summarizes important device stats and makes it very easy to identify which devices youre using. Device Stage can be used to preset common tasks, for instance synchronization. Device Stage support for older devices makes one of Windows 7s best features applicable to peripherals and externals that dont should be upgraded. One annoying change is always that Bluetooth driver support don't comes baked into the computer. If you need a Bluetooth driver, youll either want the installation disc around or youll must go download it.
Windows 7s native search feature continues to be improved. Files combined with the harddrive were indexed so quickly that they were searchable below 5 seconds later. Search result snippets now incorporate a longer snippet, and highlight the snippet more clearly. This should appeal specifically to folks who juggle a lot of long documents, however its a useful feature for everyone who is wants to find files faster. However, the search field can be acquired by default only inside Start menu plus Windows Explorer, and should not be easily included with the taskbar.
Touch-screen features worked surprisingly well. The hardware sometimes misread some from the multitouch gestures, occasionally confusing rotating a graphic, one example is, with zooming in or out from the image. Overall, though, there was clearly few difficulties in performing the fundamental series of gestures that Microsoft promotes, which places Windows 7 in the excellent position with the future, as more and much more computers are let go with multitouch abilities.
Experts and individuals or companies who hope to make use of Windows 7 for business situations will appreciate the brand new XP Mode. It does not have much of a practical application with the home consumer, but when you ought to access programs made for Windows XP who have not been upgraded to Windows Vista or 7, XP Mode makes a virtual environment within Windows 7 which should assuage any fears of upgrading without backward compatibility.
Its not all to easy to set up once youve downloaded the XP Mode installer. Youll ought to double-check that you could have the right hardware, and will get the correct software. Hardware Virtualization Technology, generally known as AMD-V, Vanderpool, or VT-d, have to be supported for it to be effective. Motherboards over the age of two years probably wont work, as well as if you do have a more recent one you might must go into your BIOS and activate Hardware Virtualization. CPU-identification utilities can be obtained from Microsoft that will tell you if youre from the clear or you cannot. However, if compatibility may be the issue, this hassle is going to be worth it for you. Users may have full having access to peripherals linked to their Windows 7 hardware, including printers, as well as the clipboard might be used to cut and paste relating to the virtual operating system as well as the real one.
User Account Control, or UAC, is back in Windows 7. Microsoft has tweaked the feature to ensure its less intrusive, however it is not clear whether meaning youre actually approximately secure than that you were in Vista. UAC was one with the biggest modifications in Vista. It tightened program access, but achieved it in such a way with regards to frustrate many those who own single-user computers. Windows 7 provides more choices for user customization of UAC.
The default setting is always to notify users only once programs try to produce changes to the pc, a stride below by far the most restrictive setting of Always Notify. Under Always Notify, anytime a course tries to access the Internet, or else you try to generate changes to laptop, Windows 7 will demand user confirmation. The second-least restrictive option doesnt dim the desktop when UAC is activated, and can only notify the consumer when programs try for making changes to the pc. When the desktop dims, Windows 7 is locking it down and preventing access. Never Notify may be the most relaxed option, and is particularly only recommended by Microsoft for programs that arent appropriate for UAC.
UAC also displays a blue banner when confronted having a program from your known publisher versus a yellow banner and exclamation point if the program originates from an unknown publisher. The number of clicks it will take to make use of UAC safely has become reduced, However, its important to observe that its a less aggressive default posture by UAC.
A less glitzy, but no less important, switch the signal from how removable drives are handled can also affect your media. Unlike Windows XP and Windows Vista, Windows 7 will don't AutoRun external harddrives and USB keys when theyre connected. This kills off a risky vector for malware infections that may be the bane of countless security experts.
Although Microsoft is working with a revamp of that antivirus and antimalware program, now called Microsoft Security Essentials, it wont be bundled with Windows 7. Users will still be required to download a third-party antivirus and antimalware program, however the Windows Firewall remains intact. As with many features in Windows 7 that are actually carried over from Windows Vista, individuals will notice theres a lot more granular settings control than before. Features like filtering outbound traffic, that had been available in Vista although not exposed, are better to access in Windows 7.
Comparing Windows: XP vs. Vista vs. 7
Introduces transparent panes, window animations, live thumbnails of running programs
Supports slideshow backgrounds, RSS and theme packs
Documents, Pictures, Music buttons now connection to their libraries
Debuts portable device API, meant to communicate with cellular phones, PDAs, and portable media players
New Device Stage comes with a centralized, unified window for managing all facets of printers and portable devices
Windows 7 feels faster than Windows XP and Vista, but it really turns out this isn't always the case-sometimes, it is the slowest out in the three systems. CNET Labs tested four 32-bit Windows os: Windows 7 RTM build 7600, Windows 7 Release Candidate build 7100, Windows Vista with Service Pack 2, and Windows XP SP3, all while on an Inspiron Desktop 530 Mini Tower running an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E4500 at 2.20 GHz, that has a 128MB NVIDIA 8300 GS graphics card, 4GB of RAM, and a couple 320GB SATA 7, 200rpm hard disk drives.
As you are able to see inside the chart, we found out that Windows 7 RTM was the quickest to shutdown, and was tied with XP for iTunes encoding. However, that it was slower than XP and Vista for both booting up cold by way of a bit more than 1 second, and slower than either of that predecessors in their Microsoft Office performance. After having used Windows 7 beta, RC, and from now on the RTM for longer than six months combined, still it feels faster for many people when launching programs, opening the cp, and dragging icons, files, and folders around than XP. Thats not to denigrate the value with the benchmarks, but keep in mind which the perception and reality might differ dependant on hardware and usage.
When you try to work with a file already used, Windows 7 surpasses Vista and XP by suggesting not just the reason is being used, but where its being used therefore you can manage your situation faster. Other than that, Windows 7 offers on-board main system support nearly the same as Windows Vista. Screen darkening, one-click action hand-holding, as well as a useful question mark icon on all Explorer windows maintain Vistas improved help features, in comparison to Windows XP.
Windows 7 looks such as the operating system that both Microsoft as well as its consumers have already been waiting for. By fixing most on the perceived and real problems in Vista, Microsoft has laid the groundwork for that future of where Windows should go. Windows 7 presents a gradual platform that will compete comfortably with OS X, while reassuring the world that Microsoft can certainly still turn out a powerful, useful operating-system.
Windows 7 may be the updated version from the Vista computer from Microsoft. Windows 7 Professional has all you need for work and home. Simplify everyday tasks: find something instantly, compare documents side-by-side, or easily back-the complete system over the network. Microsoft Windows 7 Professional is purchase-only software and will be bought and downloaded online or shipped via mail.
Always seems to become some type of run and hang up every minute or many problems.
To upgrade an additional computer you must buy another Key. They utilized to be around around 200. Highway robbery.
Software Speedy would be the best site for software Download.
I use /microsoft-windows-7-professional-oem-64-bit/for Microsoft Windows 7 Professional OEM 64 Bit.
Software Speedy may be the best site for software Download.
SSD appropriate improved performance.
Backwardly works with most serious software.
Not backwardly works with many games involving particular graphics functions.
Microsoft Security Essentials not included needs being downloaded.
I used to make use of Windows 7 64-bit which has a 7200rpm harddrive and it had been pretty good. However, having a solid state drive it flies, and starts up in a very fraction with the time, and my mainboard is just SATA2, so theoretically it must be better still with SATA3
I always have an additional standard mechanical hard disk drive to store my documents and downloads, all set to go there automatically inside the Options section in the various software, and try this so that this SSD doesnt fill approximately quickly, as it truly is only a 128gb Samsung. Since installing it for the SSD I have not had any problems.
The idea that no anti-virus for example Security Essentials is roofed means that many not-so-savvy folks are going to wind up without any protection against viruses. And its really stupid this doesnt even can be found in the optional downloads! You can only wonder on the idiocy of Microsoft management that isn't able to appreciate the world isn't full of geeks.
The OS that any decent system can t do without!
Starts so well and faster than all the others; extremely handy!
Its the top of all windows up to now; simple, simpler to find utilities and tools. Its the upgrade XP users are already waiting for. Best for pcs. Got mine at for just 82.99
Reduced functionality, heavy on resources, unhappy
Flashy, yet not really better
Wasted space, less customization file explorer
Folder views tend not to remember last position or order of things contained.
Illogical structure for user. User has to enter registry to acquire things to function logically
Useless features and flash that need to be powered down with difficulty.
And I say this utilizing an i5 an i7 with lots of memory. Theres no reason software ought to be this sluggish for this mid to powerful machines.
Flashy means slower: resource pig even if its optimized for speed.
They help it become worse and less user-friendly every time they change it out. Their incessant updates are ridiculous. The way everything is organized is illogical. Not as customizable as it ought to could be as it employed to be. They ought to have stuck with XP and refined and improved it. It was the most effective they had.
Faster, greater multitasking, less bloated, better Compatibility, convenience, more stable and much less freezes, redesigned taskbar is great, and aero theme is cool.
Not many, only con offers some of my older programs wont work and expensive.
Overall much better than that 2000 dollar rip off termed as mac and osx lion. Lion litterally froze and fporced me to restart it like half a dozen times a day. Thats 35 restarts each week! Windows 7 has never crash or froze on me since i started with it. And it truly is much faster than some other OS I used
I positively despise Windows 7. I must use it for some work related programs but otherwise have a very Mac. It might be more of precisely the same screen locking, blue screen of death, software load failure performance synonymous with Windows wait, how, after a great number of versions and updates, can nevertheless be having a similar issues? And being an additional slap inside the face, you should dig further and visit even more screens to obtain it set up just how you want. Utterly unintuitive, cumbersome, packed with annoying sounds and dings set to chime automagically, it is usually a complete annoyance. The only other businesses that may get away with Microsofts incompetence are Health Care and Car Insurance. You can cruise along for a couple of weeks without issue and after that, away from nowhere, you will find messages that Outlook failed to not closing properly, lock-ups a web based business to install a whole new am sure I am not saying anything new here.
If it reached having Windows 7 just as one only choice or having no PC by any means - I would not possess a yourself a favor and fork within the outrageous price of a Mac prior to going with WIN/PC. Once you recover financially life gets infinitely better!

Ive been using win7 because it came out plus it hasnt had any of the problems. If you took the little bit it takes to disable the backdrop sounds they wouldnt be a difficulty. Please dont write an assessment on an OS you obviously don't know anything about. Also like a side note windows was build for a more professional interface compared to macs witch might be more of an entertainment interface.

The issues you are complaining about are likely hardware-related. If you took half the funds you blew on your own Apple and obtained a decent computer it wouldnt crash at all times.

I cant afford a 2K IM machine.
Absolutely beautiful and easy make use of.
Recently upgraded from Vista, clean install as I did something stupid plus it made the OS explode, windows 7 would have been a really nice change, and Im actually glad I upgraded now.
Not a tremendous change from Vista. I had no complications with vista before I upgraded, but Windows 7 really is really a nice change. Its a lot faster just as one OS and I was rather glad to acquire rid on the crapware on my own old OS when I did this clean install.

Prevent changes for the Start menu by having a key for the Windows Registry, or even for Win7 Pro and Ultimate users, utilize Local Group Policy Editor to close attempts to include, remove, or rearrange items for the Start menu.
The availability of books, movies, and TV shows about vampires and zombies
The a very important factor all three of these mysteries have in common is the fact that they will in the end run their course and dissapear - - well, maybe not the eye tattoos, a minimum of not without a combination of laser treatments.
Since the roll-out of Windows 8 late recently PC users happen to be clamoring to the return from the Start menu. Theres more towards the widespread disdain for Win8s Start screen than only resistance to improve. For years individuals have begun their workday by clicking the Start button. Why take off the feature entirely?
Clicking would be the operative word. Most people work with a mouse as opposed to a keyboard or touchscreen technology to operate their PCs. Someday perhaps touch screens, gesture recognition, and also other technologies will let our fingers as well as other body parts perform the navigating from screen to screen and app to app - - without extraneous mechanical assistance. But considering living cycle in the average PC, preferably be clicking mouse buttons for many years. The mouse is significantly from an endangered species.
In a post from last February, I explained why I utilize Windows key rather compared to Start menu for fast usage of apps, files, and settings. My personal preference aside, there is no reason why Windows users really should be forced to operate the way Microsoft or anybody thinks they need to work.
The first rule of software development would be to allow users to work the programs inside most efficient manner. If Windows users here is a Start menu, allow them to have a Start menu. And if they would like to customize the Start menu and after that prevent any changes into it, they ought to be allowed to accomplish that, too.
Im an exceptionally organized person, and I wish to organize my Start Menu into simple and easy and intuitive subfolders for instance productivity software, games, and multimedia. However, Windows hasn't ever seemed to appreciate me taking such liberties. Every time an update is installed, it can recreate that programs subfolder of shortcuts where it absolutely was located originally rather than where I moved it. Its not a whole lot Windows updates because program updates Adobe, QuickTime, Windows Messenger, OpenOffice, my video drivers, whatever. Its done a similar thing all just how back to Win 95. Its very annoying. Is there by any means to take charge from the situation and force Windows to set Start menu icons only where I want them?
Windows 7 provides a multitude of ways to modify the Start menu. Unfortunately, the Home Premium version of Windows 7 has a Registry edit to stop changes to your Start menu by programs or users. An option inside the Group Policy Editor that is included while using Professional and Ultimate versions of Win7 permits you to disable unauthorized Start menu changes.
One in the fastest solutions to add a course or file shortcut on the Start menu in every recent versions of Windows should be to drag the shortcut on the Start button, hold it there prior to the Start menu opens, after which drop it in which you choose when Pin to Start Menu appears. You can also right-click a shortcut and select Pin to Start Menu.
To access Win7s Start menu customization options, right-click the Start button and judge Properties. The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog opens using the Start menu tab selected. From this screen it is possible to change the action performed by your PCs power button, and forestall recently opened programs and files from being displayed within the Start menu.

Click the Customize button on the top from the window to open up the Customize Start Menu dialog box. Select the issues you want to display for the Start menu and select whether to view them as links or menus. The third selection for most entries will not be to display the item whatsoever.

Youll get a complete description with the Windows 7 Start menu customization dialogs about the Microsoft TechNet site.
Windows 7s built-in Start menu options dont add a way to lock the Start menu, however, you can add this ability by editing the Windows Registry. CCM Benchmark Groups Kioskea site describes a Registry tweak that promises to counteract users from adding, removing, or changing the items about the Win7 Start menu.
Note that locking the taskbar means preventing users from repositioning the taskbar around the screen instead of blocking changes to taskbar contents. To lock the taskbar, right-click it and judge Lock the taskbar.
Note further that unless youre like Matthew and possess spend a large amount of time and effort customizing your Start menu, these system changes could possibly be more trouble than theyre worth. If youre much like me and rarely access let alone alter the Windows 7 Start menu, youre best leaving your Start menu along with Windows settings as is also.
And just remember, before you are making any changes on the Registry, develop a system restore point and that means you can revert your PC to its previous state if something goes awry. To make a restore part of Win7, click Start Control Panel System System protection, and select Create. Or press the Windows key, type system protection, select Create a restore point, and click on Create. You might be prompted to penetrate an administrator password sooner or later.
Once the restore point is produced, press the Windows key, type, and press Enter. Navigate from the left pane to the key:
If theres an Explorer key under Policies, select it. If theres not any Explorer key, opt for the Policies key inside the left pane and then click Edit New Key. Type Explorer and press Enter. Highlight the Explorer key and select Edit New DWORD 32-bit value. Name the modern value NoChangeStartMenu and hang its value to just one.
The change will need effect once you close the Registry Editor and restart the PC. To undo the Start menu lock, return to your Explorer key and hang up the NoChangeStartMenu value to 0.
Since Matthew uses the Ultimate version of Windows 7, she has another selection for preserving his custom Start menu arrangement. Press the Windows key, type, and press Enter to start the Group Policy Editor. Navigate within the left pane to the present location:
In the proper pane, navigate to Prevent changes to Taskbar and Start Menu Settings.

To let the prevent changes option, double-click the entry in the proper pane and select Enable from the resulting dialog box.
After you enable this Group Policy Editor entry, the options to vary the taskbar and Start menu settings will probably be grayed out. Screenshot by Dennis OReilly/CNET
I wasnt capable of determine whether the Registry edit and Group Policy Editor setting prevent program installers and updaters from increasing or rearranging the existing Start menu alignment, with or without users permission. Nor did I test a third-party Start menu replacement for example the free Classic Shell to view if there is a solution to lock the Start menu.
Late a year ago, CNETs Lance Whitney reviewed Classic Shell and lots of other Start menu replacements for Windows 8, many of which also work with Windows 7.
A triumphant Start menu return? Dont hold your breath
The reports that surfaced a week ago about Windows 8.1 bringing the Start button and Start menu back may are actually premature. In a post a week ago, CNETs Mary Jo Foley described users wish listing of features for Win8.1. Yesterday Lance quoted The Verge as stating version 8.1s Start button would simply lead on the Start screen.
I think about the decision to try and do away using the Start menu in Windows 8 saved Microsoft some money for the reason that company was required to know the decision wasnt likely to improve its satisfaction rating with customers. As more popular features are dropped, er, enhanced away later on Windows releases, people will probably be less prepared to pay a premium for that Microsoft brand.
The worse Windows looks, the greater Android, Chrome, Linux, and iOS look.
