How can I use Garmin Topo maps on my small laptop?
Hi, I am a keen 4x4 owner coping with Spain, and I go to Morocco frequently, so I got a new Garmin 276C, Topo EspanaV3 and Topo MarocV2, and installed MapSource on my small laptop. Unfortunately, before I even had time for you to master the 276 my first GPS, that it was stolen from your vehicle, which leaves me with my laptop with MapSource, and my 2 topo discs.
What I would like to achieve is to examine and use my Garmin topo maps in my laptop with moving map positioning like Ozi. Can I accomplish that by buying Garmin Mobile PC plus a simple USB GPS device? What do I have to buy? I have obtained a very good laptop mount in anticipation.
Mobile PC offers you a moving map display as with any GPS personal navigation device. It looks very like a Garmin Nuvi and has now a similar gui.
Did you will need to unlock those maps to work with them in Mapsource? This matters.
If you probably did not should unlock them in Mapsource : You can purchase the software-only version of Mobile PC along with an inexpensive USB GPS receiver. You can use Mapsource to put in the maps in Mobile PC.
If you did should unlock them in Mapsource : You must obtain a version of Mobile PC that features a Garmin GPS receiver, either the GPS10x bluetooth receiver or even the GPS20x USB receiver. This is because you will need a Garmin GPS serial number so as to unlock the maps. If you could have already acquired an unlock code for that 276C you simply must contact Garmin to ascertain if they will switch the unlock code on the stolen device on the new receiver.
Another substitute for Mobile PC either versions is Garmins nRoute. It is probably much more the Ozi display. Its a mature product that isn't supported by Garmin and it is free to utilize. There are a number of potiential issues few things are ever truly free.
First, it only understands the proprietary Garmin GPS protocol therefore you will need to setup a program called GPSGate try using a non-Garmin receiver. This is not a major issue since the Express version of GPSGate is incredibly cheap.
Second, you might need to convert the format with the maps. If they come inside the newer formatting that is similar to City Navigator Eurpope 2010 you have got to convert them. This is also not an enormous issue. There is usually a simple free program you'll be able to run to convert the maps to some format that nRoute use.
Thankyou with the prompt reply. I think Ill find the software using the gps receiver inside the package as I recall employing an unlock code. I have not reported the 276 stolen to Garmin yet and definitely will. Do you think I will ever be capable to trace it, I kept a note in the device number?
I am on the age of steam and technophobic which means that your knowledge is quite gratefully received.
Im also from sometime from the Jurassic, Neil. I once a baby t. rex to be a pet.
Im undecided what the itrrrs likely that of tracking your 276 however it is good you kept these devices number. If you contact Garmin to report it stolen they could probably offer you a better idea how to overcome a stolen unit. I happen to be fortunate that Ive not was required to deal with that exact issue. Its some of those things I hope remains outside my experience.
Ive bought Mobile PC that has a 20X and loaded the disc as well as its up and running. Would you be capable of give me step-by-step help on how to acquire the topo map on on the PC programme? Please recall my limited ability.
This, as well as other helpful tips, come in our Garmin Mobile PC FAQ, and that is pinned on the top with the index page in this forum section.
Very helpful, nevertheless it sure takes a bit of absorbing. Ive established that my Mapsource is version 6.12. Having read some within your info.
I considered that I should contact Garmin, and for that reason Ive aimed to fill within the fields around the Garmin support website form the way it would seem that I need new unlock codes. Not easy because I have a well used email from all of them with my first unlock code, but importantly no customer code and also this is a field that requires filling in. So my email cant get sent.
Dont laugh, but Ive spent most on the day getting no where. Must be age related.
Neil, I think its all of the blather about unlock codes that contain you bothered. With the topo maps you should be competent to cheerfully ignore almost anything to do with unlock codes. Im not conscious Garmin has ever sold any topo goods that required unlock codes. As far as I know each of their topo items are unlocked.
You should just be able to set up the maps on the CDs, run Mapsource and do as instructed for selecting and transferring map data to Mobile PC.
Worst case is you probably should update Mapsource into a newer version. The version you might have might not recognize Mobile PC, that is a pretty awesome product. Since you curently have Mapsource installed, you are able to just go onto Garmins site and download and install the modern.
Dont get rid of the old one. The Mapsource updates must see that an adult version is installed or they wont help you install the update. They just install nicely right above the old version.
Once you've Mapsource updated it is possible to follow the instruction as other thread, remembering that the very first time you seek to transfer to Mobile PC you will probably have to have it running for Mapsource to locate it. Once Mapsource found and moved to Mobile PC once, you should not ought to have Mobile PC running to transfer going without running shoes after that.
If you've a problem, are you able to please give specifics about what steps you had and exactly what results you have got, including any messages?

Topo Canada v2 vs. Ibycus Topo Canada
So i spent hours downloading the Ibycus, also it wont even unzip. Is there something peculiar to the, and am I just set for another 6 hr download?
What type of error are you currently getting when you are attempting to unzip the file?
Now that Topo Canada v4 continues to be released, you could have compare yet again.
Well, next to the top Ill mention that Dales Ibycus Topos acquire more up to date roads inside my area than Metroguide Canada 5 that's the same data as Topo Canada as I be aware of it. Garmins online map viewer usually confirm this but I have heard how the map viewer isnt always updated immediately.
Ibycus Topo has vegetation cover data and even more detailed wetland data within my area at the very least as well. I find both useful within the laptop.
The DEM digital elevation model data could well be nice if I were built with a device that may display it but I use a GPS Map 76CSi and I dont believe it is going to. The Oregon does I understand. Does anyone determine Mobile PC use DEM data?
Well, off the top Ill mention that Dales Ibycus Topos acquire more up to date roads during my area than Metroguide Canada
Same around here. Not many differences but Ibycus is usually correct when you will find differences.
Garmins online map viewer generally seems to confirm this but I have heard the map viewer isnt always updated immediately.
Definitely still the existing one. You can spot it quickly in case you just glance at the bottom on the viewer display for your copyright. The one I just considered two minutes ago is 1995-2004.
Does anyone determine Mobile PC make use of DEM data?
Yep, just zoom out until youre viewing the basemap. The Rockies look really pretty.
Whats the most recent version of Ibycus Topo Canada and where can I download it?
The latest version is 3.2. You can download it via Bit Torrent I dont contain the URL handy, but when you cant think it is, told me, and Ill dig it up.
Thanks to the excellent topo maps and many thanks for dropping by.
Newbee, heres one of the links to the torrent.
You need a BitTorrent client to download it. You can get a good website here:
If you employ utorrent, copy the Ibycus torrent link above, simply click FILE and select Add torrent from. Paste the torrent URL in to the window that appears and click OK. Hi all, new for the wish I had found you sooner.
If Im wrong, and it is often a real version, then Ill edit this so nobody else gets confused like I am.
An iso file is really a DVD image. Burn it with a DVD employing your favourite iso burning software. Then install from your DVD.
Ahh, I see now why I was obtaining a User Agreement for Sonic. My laptop that Ive only a couple weeks was preloaded with Roxio Creator. So when I simply click an ISO, the default handler was Roxio Creator, hence the reason why it opened.
Im still confused why I cant open with 7-Zip though.
EDIT: Ignore this message. Its just wrong. 7-zip should open ISO files. It does, mostly. But there seem some it doesnt like.
An ISO file is really a disk image. It is not just a compressed file. Thats why 7-Zip wont open it. As you guessed, filetype is assigned to your Roxio program so double-clicking file launches Roxio to lose it to some DVD.
The reason you observe something else on Dales video is that he uses some other burning program. I know youve also figured that out. Thats exclusively for others who may check this out thread later.
Thanks to the feedback Ken and tcassidy. It was earlier in this particular thread, around post 11 hehe, I just noticed, which was 2008, that you simply and Dale discussed the next option of installing from an ISO, which is, without burning it first.
He suggested that 7zip would extract files from an ISO because post, and checked his video, he says precisely the same there. Even the 7-zip documentation says it can extract files from an ISO.
Just without needing any luck I guess. Ill try daemon tools, in case that dont work to mount the look, Ill be off to discover those blank DVDs. been missing them considering that the reno last fall
PS, Dale, If youre reading this article, Thanks with the work you choose to do, once Im back at the job Ill send something the right path.
PPS, Ill edit my earlier post therefore, the search crawlers dont recognize some wrong info.
You are absolutely right. I had ignored that feature of 7-zip because I rarely put it to use. When I accomplish that with, I obtain the same error one does.
I possess a bunch of different ISO files on my small computer so I just started undergoing them one-by-one and looking to open them 7-zip. I did six and that it was about 50:50. Some open plus some make it whine the reason is not an archive. Im not smart enough to be capable of figure out the difference involving the ones realistically work and the ones that do not.
I did some digging plus the only thing I found was obviously a post from the 7-zip forum on SourceForge where someone remarked that when attempting to open ISO files with 7-zip they have problems with some types of udf files and asking if this could be fixed. There was no response.
Got it burned and installed, thanks for that discussion. Hopefully I can have these loaded into the GPS and do a little hiking earlier this week.
So i spent hours downloading the Ibycus, also it wont even unzip. Is there something peculiar to the, and am I just looking for another 6 hr download?
What style of error will you be getting when you are attempting to unzip the file?
Now that Topo Canada v4 has become released, you can have compare once again.
Well, off the top Ill explain that Dales Ibycus Topos have an overabundance up to date roads around my area than Metroguide Canada 5 that is the same data as Topo Canada as I realize it. Garmin s online map viewer usually confirm this but I have heard how the map viewer isnt always updated straight away.
Ibycus Topo has vegetation cover data plus more detailed wetland data within my area a minimum of as well. I find both useful around the laptop.
The DEM digital elevation model data could be nice if I stood a device that may display it but I use a GPS Map 76CSi and I dont believe it's going to. The Oregon does I understand. Does anyone determine Mobile PC uses DEM data?
Well, off the top Ill mention that Dales Ibycus Topos have an overabundance up to date roads inside my area than Metroguide Canada
Same around here. Not many differences but Ibycus is mostly correct when you will discover differences.
Garmin s online map viewer generally seems to confirm this but I have heard the map viewer isnt always updated straight away.
Definitely still that old one. You can spot it quickly in case you just glance at the bottom on the viewer display to the copyright. The one I just considered two minutes ago is 1995-2004.
Does anyone determine if Mobile PC makes use of DEM data?
Yep, just zoom out until youre viewing the basemap. The Rockies look really pretty.
Whats the newest version of Ibycus Topo Canada and where can I download it?
The latest version is 3.2. You can download it via Bit Torrent I dont hold the URL handy, but when you cant still find it, make me aware, and Ill dig it up.
Thanks for that excellent topo maps and many thanks for dropping by.
Newbee, heres the link to the torrent.
You will require a BitTorrent client to download it. You can get a doozy here:
If you have utorrent, copy the Ibycus torrent link above, select FILE and select Add torrent from. Paste the torrent URL into your window that appears and click OK. The torrent should start downloading. Be patient. It will take awhile. Depending around the number of systems seeding it at virtually any time, should it be a day or two.

These are the modern 25k topo maps. According to Garmin when I called them that may be correct and being fair for this retailer I gave it 3 stars since their description is correct and so they supplied the most recent version. HOWEVER it will be good to know beforehand that the newest version was last updated in April 2009 and doesnt contain road and city features much after 2005. When I called Garmin they confirmed this was the most up-to-date topo map and stated that topography doesnt maneuver around or need updated in case I needed roads to make use of my Nuvi. I am a paraglider pilot and once I glide for some distant location and land I want to recognise where I am and I usually land next to some road. Garmin openly admitted it normally won't update the trail and street information usually and searching these maps I could find multiple roads which are built between 2005 and 2009 that happen to be not on these maps in addition to those built after April 2009.
If you desire reasonably detailed topography - that is certainly hills, lakes, valleys, coastline etc or tacks and roads that existed before 2005 these maps are excellent. If you are attempting to locate a road name and where you are onto it and the trail was bulit after 2006 forget it the knowledge isnt here. The best you may do is zoom out until it shows a road which being fair is often named and present that road and also your GPS location to someone trying to seek out you.
I love Garmin products and I like my Oregon 450t and my Nuvi 40LM, but I think it is usually a pretty poor excuse to state topo maps dont must be updated with new roads more frequently than every several years or so after you own a corporation that can update my other product with detailed roads about every couple of years.
It is silly being told expressing whether you should recommend these if you have no more current available! Read this review then decide in the event you want them by any means. Bottom line they can be better than 100k maps.

Im not used to GPS for hikers and bikers. This may be the first GPS I have thats aimed towards Hiking and Biking. The trex 30 spent some time working well. The concept is pretty different from GPSs which might be turn by turn street GPSs. I hike and mtb in areas far from roads.
The Topo map was absolutely necessary to expand the included maps. The two default and included maps did not contain the detail required for hiking. So, this topo map addition is basically necessary for hiking or mountain biking. The included maps have road info, but tracking trails and and off-road tracks requre info you would like the topo map. This map program has filled niche. I cant compare it to similar products, since Im a newcomer. The auto track function is great on complicated trail hikes. Why? Well, you may find towards you back towards the car, civilization, all your family members, etc. Its such as a bread crumb navigation because you may just follow your track back for your car.
Thank you to your feedback.

Cheaperless space than getting 24k USA maps. I live in VA and the have served me well on my own mountain trips.
You can route with one of these maps and you cant search. Get street maps or employ a phone handy if you're prone to obtain lost on roads.
Topographic maps naturally dont have by far the most up-to-date streets about them. Theyre focused on accuracy about the geography, i appreciate.
The trails could possibly be off, but you can find trails through the JNF in here. Just pay attention for the trail making a track within your progress in lieu of depending on theirs.
Its probably a smart idea to make waypoints for your target in Basecamp before moving out still.
Thank you on your feedback.

I bought this map to choose my Garmin Edge 800 that I use for mountain biking. The maps are fantastic and very detailed as you expected. They refresh quickly therefore you certainly need them in case you ever wish to go off the beaten trail or maybe explore.
Would have given 5 stars except for that used to become able for getting ALL the US states but they switched up to only providing regions. Shame for you still worth it when you really want to make use of GPS to its fullest.
Thank you on your feedback.

If you wish to hike, bike or geocache, this would be the map to suit your needs. Clear terrain shading gives perfect picture products to expect round the next bend within the trail. Ive been utilizing the Garmin Topo series products for a long time and have never stood a complaint. Keep up the excellent work, Garmin!
Thank you for the feedback.

If youre seeking just a topo map in the 7 states included here, this relatively expensive one is decent. If youre trying to find a map that includes up-to-date hiking trails in those states, this map can be quite poor. Even for popular national parks Shenandoah National Park, the maps are horribly outdated with regard for the trail system. Some popular trails are missing, and a few trails which can be included for the map havent existed for years. For less popular areas, everything is even worse Monogohela. Im uncertain where to get better digital resources other commercially produced maps for instance the National Geographic topo maps have similar problems, but caution, concerning the product.
Thank you to your feedback.

The maps are wonderful, but you are able to not copy this to some new facts for larger storage, and it is possible to not install it straight away to the gps it self. should you not unlock it - illegal though huge fail for me personally. Apparently i would have got the DVD version?
Thank you for ones feedback.

Nice detail. Pretty easy to setup. No complaints.
I purchased the SD card version with this almost a year ago. It makes a tremendous improvement on the maps. I understand why Garmin doesnt include it stock, profit. Read more
For geocaching or serious hiking the detail with the 24K maps is way superior to your pre-loaded 100K maps. Worth the extra expense.
Other than being from 2009 I would of giving slideshow 5 star rating. Will work an excellent option for hiking in WV and VA both.
IT WAS THE SAME CARD THAT CAME IN MY ASRTO 320 I WAS LOOKING FOR MORE DETAIL, ROAD NAMES ECT.

I m a huge fan of free. A few months back I posted about how for getting Free World Routing Maps to your Garmin GPS Device, using alternative data from your Open Street Map project. Not satisfied while using data is was issuing for elevation charts hills start to become my nemesis I hopped upon a Canadian who's making free Topographical Maps that are in a position to be utilized with your GPS, Mapsource, or Garmin Basecamp.
These maps are manufactured by Dale Atkin who resides in Alberta. He s using the most up-to-date government databases for some of his data therefore the actual topographic data and some from the road data dependant upon province is really a lot more informed than Garmin s own Topo Canada maps Currently at V4. If you've got ever used 1:50, 000 federal or provincial topographic maps you ll be immediately accustomed to what the truth is in these maps.
To get use of these things, you simply must download file which he has prepared. I recommend utilizing a client like uTorrent to download it.
It s a huge file, 3GB worth! So be sure you have enough space, plus a proper web connection. Once complete you ll need to set up the maps.
It s an easy process Burn file into a DVD most burning software can accomplish this, or extract file with WinRAR, as well as other archive management program. You could also mount it with Daemon-Tools or Pismo File Audit Pacakge in the event you wished.
Simply run the setup file, and it is going to automatically install it to your system, ready to become viewed through your Mapping software. It s smart enough to detect should you ve got a 64bit computer, so two thumbs up for the, some maps need a bit hacking I have found inside past. Select Ibycus Topo through the drop down list within the top left hand corner so you are ready to make use of the prepared maps.
One thing to notice, the Ibycus Topo mapping is NOT currently routable. Nor should it have a delivery database or perhaps a general POI database topographical POIs only. If you'll need any of these features, you ll still need Garmin City Navigator or equivalent mapping. At the very least, the Ibycus Topo mapping is just the thing for viewing over a computer along with using as a possible additional mapping layer over a Garmin GPS device.
You might also would like to check out the WikiProject Canada who is within the process of merging both OSM and Topo maps together in a nice downloadable package. They also employ a wealth of more information for those enthusiastic about going across Canada having a GPS on trails if you do not hand over a lot of money to Garmin for maps.
