I first commenced using Corel Draw back when I bought a license of Corel Draw 2. Not only does the program take in Adobe files, CorelDraw gives a workspace that emulates the design and feel of Illustrator, and Photopaint comes with a similar workspace for Photoshop, in addition to some recently added path-friendly capabilities. So, how well does the Corel suite really handle Adobe files?
I prepared information in Illustrator CS5 with two art boards, two main layers, and eight sub-layers some were created for the fly as I added text. Into this project I placed a daring spline-defined squiggle, some gradient-filled shapes, and text within Arial italic which both programs offer, and Accent SF, which can be only available in Adobe programs. I saved the file being an Illustrator file.
Upon first opening the file in CorelDraw, I was informed that Accent SF was unavailable, and offered a choice of replacing all instances with another font one was suggested, either that one time, maybe in general. All text remained editable, as did the shapes along with the squiggle, including re-splining. All good. The Corel site offers more complete specifics of what kinds of effects are brought forward, and what isnt.
While the information translation was good, however, the workspace translation had not been. The art boards were changed to pages, which in Corel are tabbed, not side-by-side, along with the main layers were retained, however, not the sublayers. Most people wont care. Read more
