If youre a lover, or simply a casual watcher, of science fiction movies from the 1950s and early 1960s, this exhaustively researched, 2-1/4-inch-thick tome deserves a prominent place within your library. It is, in simple terms, THE definitive reference book for the subject. Period. There is none better. The conscientious reviewer MIGHT explain only one minor problem-but on that later.
Mr. Warren does an unbelievably thorough job of presenting one of the most minute information of virtually every American science fiction film made out of 1950 through 1962. The classics are here, certainly. Destination Moon, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Thing From Another World, Forbidden Planet, Creature on the Black Lagoon and War in the Worlds each receive 10 roughly pages of treatment in really small, closely spaced print, mind you. Mr. Warren says to you everything you could ever wish to know in regards to the script, the director, the actors, the camera work such as these were, in those times, the cost, the editing, the musical score plus the reception that every movie got on its initial release. He includes meaningful, interesting details and fascinating anecdotes, many of which I cant imagine how he were able to dig up. Lesser films including to pick one or two at random Mesa of Lost Women and The Rocket Man get just a page or possibly even longer, but nevertheless with full discussions of every films production and the way it fits to the genre. Bill Warrens massive 1300 page two volume set, Keep Watching The Skies!: American Science Fiction Films on the Fifties, is by far one of the most comprehensive work of their kind, however, it will not be completely exhaustive. Incredibly detailed - where else could one look for a lengthy discussion of four years old different scripts by four different authors, each vying with the honors in Conquest Of Space? - the volumes include penetrating reviews from the Big Five: The Day The Earth Stood Still; The War with the Worlds; The Thing From Another Planet; Forbidden Planet and Invasion on the Body Snatchers, as well as being a host of lesser heralded lights. Warren spent my youth during this era with the exceptional self admitted nostalgia creeps in periodically in the entertaining way, but not to your point of disturbing his objectivity. In fact, its nostalgic passion that provided him the rocket fuel to tackle and finish such a formidable task. As well as being the Big Five, I derived considerable pleasure from reading Warrens favorable reviews of these spicy delectables as The Man From Planet X; Kronos; The Creeping Unknown and The Incredible Shrinking Man - films that made lasting graphic impressions upon me like a child inside 1950s. I have two quibbles - both relatively minor - with Keep Watching The Skies! - you are Warrens inclusion of an small number of films like The Bowery Boys and Jungle Jim, the location where the sci-fi elements are incredibly scant and peripheral about hardly qualify them for your genre. Keep Watching The Skies! will be the most detailed and engrossing survey of golden-age science fiction films I have ever read. No other film/video guide within the topic compares from it. Warren usually supplies a synopsis with the plot, a discussion on the cast and exactly how they perform inside film, and also useful stuff regarding the writers and directors. We find out how the film was received in their time, and ways in which well its organized over the years. Warren isn't the source for 1-5 star ratings of those films, or smug quips about precisely how awful some old movies could be, however the reader always gets a concept of how good the films are, or how bad. Overall the publication provides the top reading Ive entirely on these films individually and for the 1950s science fiction boom. Believe all from the rave reviews and buying this book!

When I first obtained both thick yellow hardbound volumes of the book over a decade ago, I could hardly express my delight on the serious and detailed attention given to those films I loved so much being a child and teenager inside the golden 1950s. I still enjoy dipping engrossed. A relevant About a decade ago, my pal was visiting me for the week. My movie- and TV-related books were as to what was then the guest bedroom. After his first night by himself, I asked if he had any difficulty sleeping, since my neighborhood is oftentimes noisy anf the husband was then troubled with insomnia. He replied, I never reached sleep. When I asked just what the trouble was, he was quoted saying, No trouble, I just saw KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES about the shelf, started using it down, and couldnt stop reading! There is one challenge with the first volume on the book, an issue the author himself points out- it absolutely was written prior to the age of videotape, to ensure the author was struggling to watch any from the films he discussed while writing the discussions, and was can not see some from the films, including DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS, whatsoever. This is one reason the next volume is a great deal fatter than the 1st, because when it absolutely was written video tapes were becoming available for the many films being analyzed. One is only able to dream of the first volume would have been like, been with them been developed in 1990, say. But we should be thankful for what we've.
