A sparkling pianist, Keith was obviously a complete unknown with the time, yet, miraculously it seemed, fit in with all the Dead immediately. The live Р‘Skull RosesР‘ double-album recorded within the winter-spring of Р‘71 had just end up, and the group was still going for a surge of unprecedented popularity since WorkingmanР‘s Dead and American Beauty were released the year before. They were using a roll!

If the quiet keyboardist was nervous or puzzled by himself with this first jaunt, it certainly wasnР‘t apparent. And you can notice the electricity inside the rest of this rock band, as Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill absorb and play over amazingly inventive musings of the new recruit. Of course PigpenР‘s absence was deeply felt and the group acknowledged it at each and every stop, but KeithР‘s entrance am seamless along with the energy he injected into your music so impressive, the group didnР‘t apparently lose many of the momentum they'd been building tour after tour.
The songs undoubtedly are a blend of old, still-recent from WorkingmanБs Dead on and brand-new. One forgets that crowd-pleasers for instance БBertha, Б БDealБ and БPlaying inside the BandБ had come in the repertoire only eight months earlier, and БTruckinББ and БSugar MagnoliaБ were approximately a year old. Where do I start? Admittedly I prefer The Dead into their early period best-so I may be partial. And while theyve certainly released many stellar shows over time, early stuff incorporates a certain something later releases dont. Maybe its because I heard this rock band in the days when Pigpen was, automagically the leader of this rock band according to Garcia because nobody wanted the project, before Garcia stood a beard-just large sideburns, and so they sometimes played without cost-and releases just like it are reminders of such far away fun days. The band was still being exploring tunes like Playing In The Band that may become staples within their live shows for quite some time, and this newness, that sparkle of acid-flash playing was wound throughout the music. This show also featured several tunes in the Workingmans Dead and American Beauty albums-both great releases. And they continued to be playing some tunes from your early days, that gives this release some added depth.
But in the opening notes of Bertha, that begins this set, the group is along with things. No wasted notes, the arrangements are tight for The Dead, and theres an excitement all the way through this 3 CD set. Perhaps its since this is only the other and third demonstrates that new guy, Keith Godchaux, played together with the band. Perhaps its as this was earlier days in the tour. But anything, the bands playing is extremely good.
The initial two discs are through the second night at The Auditorium, a lovely theater in Chicago. The third disc is highlights on the previous night, and they are every bit as good as anything here. Other recordings with this same venue may be heard on Dicks Picks 35, and Road Trips Vol. 1, No. 3, all from 1971.

To all subcribers with the Daves Picks series that still havent received this third edition in the series you will need to call Rhino Records leave a message within the phonelines over there as Grateful Dead Productions aren't handling the shipping of the hard to get your hands on set. I called Rhino on Wednesday with this week and in addition they returned my get in touch with less than two hours along with the guy laughed and said on that return call there's no tracking information available within the large volume of discs hundreds? thousands? which are lost rather than delivered towards the folks that ordered the series as well as the others that ordered this set alone merits and caused the Daves Picks to trade out well before the original ship date of: 1 August 2012. After my phone call using a real live person from Rhino I plucked Daves Picks - Vol. 3 outta my mailbox 3 days later on Saturday now Im last Dead Nirvana paying attention to this fine addition with a already great number of live Grateful Dead music.
REMEMBER: If you dont call Rhino they'll have no knowledge that you simply never received this third volume within the first place with out replacement is destined to be coming your path! CALL!!!
This four part group of live groups of Grateful Dead music has visted 1974 and 1977 before this third edition from Chicago in October 1971 and these are typically Keith Godchauxs second and third shows to be a member in the Grateful Dead on his earliest tour. The first night on the stand in Chicago was an FM broadcast that was obviously a stable of tapers lists remember days past? along with the entire contents on the third disc in this Daves Picks is removed from that first night. Friday, October 22, 1971 found the Dead performing their second show, of your two night stand, in the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. The band ended up introducing new songs into your set lists as well like a new piano player. This can be Keith Godchauxs third show using the band. Pigpen was sitting out after August but can be back by December.
The first set opens with Bertha, a song introduced in February, and already feels as though a classic. As was common with the time, a hot Me And My uncle is next. The next two songs Tennessee Jed and Jack Straw were introduced at Keiths first show on October 19th at Northrup Auditorium in Minneapolis. The band then play several more songs broken in February with hot versions of Playing In The Band and Sugaree. Beat It One Down The Line is often a nice upbeat version. The version of Black Peter on we have found one of my top picks ever since the tape started circulating a number of years ago. Mexicali Blues is the one other song that made its live debut with Keith. Cold, Rain And Snow has the group returning to its folk roots and can be a keeper. Kris Me And Bobby McGee had only been from the bands play lists about per year but it sounds as if the group has been playing it for several years. The first set ends with two more song premiered at Keiths first show, Comes A Time with the extra verse soon for being dropped and One More Saturday Night. Ramble On Rose and Cumberland Blues start your second set in fine fashion. The Thats It For The Other One-Deal is amazing and also the set is rounded out with cool versions of Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones-Johnny B. Goode.
The third disc is really a somewhat short compilation with the great show from your first night. Read more

Daves Picks Vol. 3 originates from a duration of Grateful Dead history which was very transitional naturally. For this tour, these people were without Pigpen and brought inside the newest band member, pianist Keith Godchaux. It also was into their most fertile song writing period of the career. The featured performance is the entire concert from October 22, 1971, in the Auditorium Theater in Chicago IL. This show was your second consecutive night with the Auditorium Theater as well as the release carries a third disc that may the highlights in the Oct. 21 show, and just one song is repeated, Me and Bobby McGee.
This was the next performance with Keith Godchaux up to speed. his debut was 72 hours earlier in Minneapolis, MN on October 19 and in addition they debuted six songs your evening, that were also played with this featured concert. They are: Tennessee Jed, Jack Straw, Mexicali Blues, Ramble On Rose, Comes A Time and One More Saturday Night, and Ramble on Rose.
The evenings first set derives passion for the entire first disc along with the first two tracks of the 2nd disc. The material is primarily culled from 1970s Workingmans Dead and later which has a few exceptions. With so many new tracks, they actually them justice, however, the songs did improve after a while. The best listens from the first set in my experience are Jerry sung songs, Black Peter, and Cold Rain and Snow, neither new. The version of Playing inside Band the group gets beyond synch within a key portion in the jam, making that track anti-climatic.
On to the other set they continue which has a new number, Ramble on Rose, and head time for Workingmans Dead to get a strong version of Cumberland Blues. You can really feel this guitar rock band changing music directions using their psychedelic roots up to here. Then Jerry peels over notes to Cryptical Envelopment where were reminded from the bands genesis. A good version, Keiths second live performance on the track. A bit of improvising ensues following drum solo, in fact it is clear, the newest guy can surely sustain. As this rock band gets to end of The Other One, it sounds being a Cosmic Charlie tease, before they opt to get a cool transition into Deal.
The third disc include the key parts from your previous evening. The highlight is Dark Star. The early Keith versions of Dark Star are shorter versus the Europe 72 renditions, and they also often sandwiched a song in within. Here they segue into Sitting On Top of This World then to Dark Star Me and Bobby McGee. A very fine musical segment, my favorite from the release. With Keith up to speed, Sitting On Top of This World has barrelhouse style piano in place from the organ tones that Pigpen favored, considerably more to my liking.
I get the most interesting pieces on this Grateful Dead era would be the versions of Dark Star and The Other One. The other music, I tend to favor the songs from different periods. It is certainly worth hearing earlier shows with Keith for historical purposes, but to my ears, not for definitive versions. Jerrys voice sounds magnificent, especially on songs like Black Peter, Cumberland Blues, and Comes a Time.

Daves Picks Vol. 3 comes from a time period of Grateful Dead history that's very transitional in the wild. On to the other set they continue that has a new number, Ramble on Rose, and head returning to Workingmans Dead for any strong version of Cumberland Blues. You can really feel the group changing music directions using their company psychedelic roots up to here. Then Jerry peels off of the notes to Cryptical Envelopment where we're also reminded in the bands genesis. A good version, Keiths second live performance on the track. A bit of improvising ensues as soon as the drum solo, in fact it is clear, the revolutionary guy can surely carry on. As this guitar rock band gets to end of The Other One, it sounds such as a Cosmic Charlie tease, before they opt for any cool transition into Deal.
The third disc include the key parts in the previous evening. The highlight is Dark Star. The early Keith versions of Dark Star are shorter as opposed to Europe 72 renditions, and they also often sandwiched a song in within. Here they segue into Sitting On Top of This World then returning to Dark Star Me and Bobby McGee. A very fine musical segment, my favorite from the release. With Keith fully briefed, Sitting On Top of This World has barrelhouse style piano in place on the organ tones that Pigpen favored, a lot more to my liking.
I get the most interesting pieces with this Grateful Dead era would be the versions of Dark Star and The Other One. The remaining music, I tend to favor the songs from different periods. It is certainly worth hearing earlier shows with Keith for historical purposes, but to my ears, not for definitive versions. Jerrys voice sounds magnificent, especially on songs like Black Peter, Cumberland Blues, and Comes a Time.

Maybe it could be better if those responsible could actually discover how to manage fulfilment in the effective, effcient and very affordable way. Then we do not need to waste much time and effort complaining on here and can be happily talking concerning the release because we've got the fecking thing to focus on.
Is there any solution to have two discussion threads for every single release? One thread could possibly be for shipping issues, missing discs, and the like, plus the other thread might be discussing the songs.
This isn't a knock on all in the poor frustrated souls who're using this forum to talk about their exposure to shipping - it would be the logical destination to do so. I just wish there would be a way to separate the background music
I trust simonrob re the raised postal charges for non US Deadheads. In my case in the event the charges for next years subscription can be as we fear then I are unsure if I meet the expense of that outlay even though I wanted the subscription, which I probably would as I have obtained into the rest, Daves Picks, Road Trips Dicks picks the many boxes etc.
A sad day when we're also being priced out on the game caused by postal charges after we see the amount we have already been prepared to commit to Euro72 etc.

this cd may be the show recorded the night time before the shows featured on dicks picks20. this place,,, williamsburg va. 09/24/76,, is certainly one awesome concert.!!the entire bands playing here's exceptional.! billys drumming here makes me desire to call him the buddy rich of rock music. phil is sonic lesh fingers moving like lightning! jerry is at fine form and is particularly showing throughout this release why he can be a hall of fame guitarist.!! mickey can be a percussion machine! bobby will be bobby,, and kieth,, oh my god does he sparkle on piano.!! rarely do you want to hear him more out front leading the charge like he does with this show,, just really fine piano playing. this guitar rock band played through 1973 and apparently it became a mutual love fest, and there was clearly no question they will be back with an encore performance,, well, this is it!! first set; promised land starts the showcase hot. high energy, one on the better versions you might and cassidy are two of one of the best songs when played inside the first set,, really helps to maintain energy bar set high! sugaree at a minimum of 10 minutes is often a rockin version,, jerry is feeling it here.! an extended row jimmy almost 10 min.is played sweetly,, big river and tennessee jed are directly on as always. you might be very happy to hear donna sounding fine here since the fireworks really turn off when they wrap pt. 1 and pt.2 around a bare supplication, and that is truly a special treat and incredibly rare!! one on the best, playing in this guitar rock band, i've heard from following vacation. The fourth list of the Daves Picks of live concerts closes out 2012 in fine style as this guitar rock band returns on the College of William Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia on September 24, 1976. The band had restarted the path journeys on June 3 in Portland, Oregon sufficient reason for Mickey Hart back on drums with Bill Kreutzmann the group was showing more might and stomp than they'd prior towards the 18 month hiatus.
The first set is above average due to this year with Sugaree and Row Jimmy being their early standouts. To end the primary set The Dead begin: Playing In The Band possibly at three minutes into Playing the group heads to a cool spacey jam that finds Keith and Jerry getting way on the market and co-sharing wicked lead runs between your piano and guitar plus the very pretty jamming makes this one from the better versions captured on tape. At almost 12 minutes in Playing melts perfectly into: Supplication as well as its a bit shoter than normal yet still evolving like a concert piece nevertheless its great to know it clear of Lazy Ligthning this also was quite different since it morphed right last Playing In The Band for any short reprise to shut out set one.
Set two gets underway with Bob telling everyone else to require a step back after which he adds: Just go in this way with your elbows and provide the guy behind that you sharp jab and hell be required to move back! Not quite the pacifists this Grateful Dead. The band starts into Might As Well and you'll notice the degree of energy of The Dead has risen a bunch as well as the dragon is breathing fire now. The Deads 1976 Fall tour began on Thursday September 23rd which has a show at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke University in Durham, North Carolina before trying Fridays show at William And Mary Hall in the College Of William And Mary in Williamsburg, Virgina. Shortly prior to tour, longtime roadie Rex Jackson was killed in a very car accident so Betty Cantor, who was simply married to Rex for the time, remained home using the tour being taped by Dan Healy in the PA feed.
The show kicks off having a high energy Promised Land and is also followed by the fantastic Deal. The early version of Cassidy here flies which is brimming with energy. Sugaree is usually a massive groovin version and it is among my personal favorite versions despite a little of coil feedback from Jerrys guitar at one time. Looks Like Rain is one from the best because of this era and Row Jimmy is stunning. Big River rocks hard as usual and Tennessee Jed is fun. the 1st set ends which has a great Playing In The Band- Supplication- Playing In The Band.
The second set opens which has a great Might As Well which has a nice time consuming ending. Samson And Delilah gets some foot stomping action and Loser incorporates a nice deep groove. New Minglewood Blues had just been recently revived for the Orpheum in San Francisco the earlier July. The long second set jam begins having an out in this world run of Help On The Way- Slipknot!- Drums- Slipknot!- Franklins Tower- The Music Never Stopped- Stella Blue. Due to reel flips, there undoubtedly are a couple of brief audience patches in Slipknot! and Stella Blue. The Help- Slip- Franklins section is wonderfully spacy while Music packs a punch and Stella is movingly mellow. The show ends that has a hot Around And Around which is finished using a great Blues encore. Read more
