It is probably not a bad idea to download and save the Windows XP Service Pack 3 installer in the event you later need to move an XP machine to Windows 8. Heres where to locate it plus some more what it really XPs end-of-life.
March 14, 2014 - - 12:00 GMT 05:00 PDT
Whatever floats your boat.
There is really a good news. While Microsoft will not issue any longer updates for XP after April 8 - - much to my disagreement and also to my ZDNet colleague Ed Botts prefer to let the OS die with dignity - - Microsoft will still permit you to run Windows Update on XP systems following your April 8 date.
That amount of relief emanates from the keyboard of one other ZDNet colleague, Mary Jo Foley, who writes:
Microsoft continues to make all patches and fixes meant to Windows XP up to April 8, 2014, on the market to users via Windows Update. There are no current offers to remove existing Windows XP security updates from Windows Update after end of support on April 8, 2014, a spokesperson confirmed.
The simple truth is, none of people will have looked everywhere and we will find some forgotten machines. I thought Id found our VMs and critical machines, but I had forgotten one machine that been buried behind a box of cleaning supplies from the garage.
Like lots of you, I have a great deal of old machines and parts scattered around, used in certain projects and discarded or place into the limbo we call the garage shelves.
As it ended up, that machine stood a solid motherboard and also a 10, 000 RPM ! hard disk drive in it. My wife needed an extra box to utilize as a scanning workstation and as opposed to run out and get a new machine, I scoured the boneyard, finding this beast. But it had XP upon it, and also since it hadnt been run or dusted since prior to days of SP3, it wouldnt upgrade until I first upgraded it to SP3.
Ive upgraded old XP machines before although its annoying, it isn't a terrible process with a pile of spare Windows 8 licenses I bought for 40 each, its a whole lot cheaper than a brand new machine.
Now, back when I wrote 8 lessons learned from upgrading a dog-slow XP machine to Windows 8, a lot of you were pretty very frustrating to me for not having all of my XP machines already updated to SP3 - - and that is needed to head to Windows 8. But the in order to, and such as machine I just dusted off from the garage, weve been using treadmills for a lot more than a decade but not all of them come in continuous service.
As I willing to run the update process for the soon-to-be-new-again scanning machine, I pointed out that I wasnt sure how easy it could be, in years in the future, to seek out XPs SP3 as a way to upgrade those old machines.
I don't possess an purpose of making a career of reviving old dogs and turning them into Windows 8 boxes, but my decades pc experience tells me that there should come a day when you are performing so is important for some critical and unexpected reason.
So Ive gone ahead and downloaded a copy from the professionals and developers installer for SP3, which is usually a self-contained downloadable executable. Ive backed that up in the same location Ive backed up my other patch files and installers and from now on, if I someday want it, I have it.
I recommend one does the same. Heres the link within the Microsoft site to download it. Its not big, it wont call for much time, but when you demand it in the future, youll thank me for assisting you be prepared.
Im not to imply Microsoft will pull it down. Microsoft really has a security patch online for Windows 98 yes, I tested of some extent of twisted curiosity, but I am saying put simply if you just happen to offer the XP SP3 inside your toolbox in the event.
Eh. Do what you look for. You know you folks will, anyway. Go ahead and inform me what you think from the TalkBack section below.

Ive got a Lenovo n100 laptop thats 36 months old. It dual boots the main Windows XP that included it and Ubuntu, and I just now pointed out that the XP installation, within the Task Manager, only shows 1 CPU.
The device manager does show 2 processors its a core duo T2300, nonetheless it looks like one too isnt being employed. Googling established that SP2 needed a particular hot fix allow this, but nothing occurs on SP3, when I downloaded the said hot fix it won't install, saying I have a newer solution.
Just to generate things clear, I checked and it is just not that Task Manager shows all CPUs in exactly the same graph.
Does anyone understand how to fix this?
Run the msconfig utility, check out the tab, then click Advanced.
The NUMPROC checkbox needs to be unchecked to make use of all processors.
As an evaluation, seek to check it and find out what does the drop-down list contain.
If its content has only the value 1, then something is actually wrong.
Then absolutely suit why it requires to be explicitly set as it should not ought to. Maybe it is really a driver issue? Maybe the

From what I understand, this forces Windows to work with the multi-core kernel: and hardware abstraction layer: It s likely the machine was installed using single-core kernel and HAL. TechMedicNYC Jul 6 13 at 16:43

Heres another possibility.
Do you've installed the uniprocessor or multiprocessor version of XP?
Uniprocessor systems have as kernel, while multiprocessor systems have in C:WINDOWSsystem32.
Also in Device Manager, expand Computer. You should see ACPI Multiprocessor PC. If youre seeing Advanced Configuration and Power Interface ACPI PC next the is wrong.
If either on the above two checks are wrong, youll must reinstall XP.

How do Win2K/XP users have the full download version of IE6 sp1?? The usual two methods that I use to get this done seem being defunct:
If you are attempting the first method from the download page, you will get this nice little message:
Windows 2000 and Windows XP users Custom installation isn't available for Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 2000 or Windows XP os.
The Windows Update Corporate Web site has become retired.
No new updates happen to be published on the Windows Update Corporate Web site since March 1, 2002.
So, just what are we meant to do????
Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
RM-This could possibly be from exactly the same MS FTP server or possibly a mirror, and can this work in your case?
Also as Dave A and Joe P pointed out for the XP threads, you are able to get IE 6 SP1 while using 134 MB download for networks and multiple computers.
1 Whether an Express XPSP1 also contains IE6SP1-I would sure think it lets you do.
2 Would there be any harm, assuming you were built with a Win 2K machine, in adding XPSP1 plus some of its hotfixes to that particular machine? I couldnt remember whether that you are using a 2K or perhaps an XP machine because your question said 2K/SP.

Thanks to all or any! I think I must be able to get it now.
I was shopping around the update options tonight seeking to trim back the download time still on slow-speed dialup at home and learned that by visiting the custom setup after which choosing the advanced option I was given dialogue box where I could opt to Download limited to a full install later. This is for WinME, so I cant say for sure if this will work available for you, but as Im on Win2K in the office Ill give it a shot tomorrow.
Long Beach, California, USA
Sorry, but that only works well with Win9x. Win2K/XP just isn't given the Custom option.
Bummer. img border0 altbummer width15 height15 Ok, so might be there any explanation why Microsoft may be removing the Custom installation options from other OSs now IE? I liked the old events of Win 3.x if the setup asked whatever we wanted to install. img border0 altdisappointed width15 height15
Long Beach, California, USA
I cannot answer why Microsoft does anything. ;-
The link given by Leif will give you the method that should work.
Found a solution, just might require some help to implement. With home WinME, selecting custom install, then the download option, I was due to the following selection box. Unless it cant deliver just what it seems to promise, I think that most that would be needed is to tend to download the Win2000XP version over a Win98/ME platform and either transfer the file where needed via email, network, or burned to your cd.
