I installed SUSE while on an IBM ThinkPad R50 and overall Im pretty satisfied. It has excellent support for laptop functions like power management, Trackpoint mouse, and suspend-to-disk, these all worked immediately without tweaking. Of course, GIMP and OpenOffice are wonderful. The manuals 900 pages are excellent as manuals go. I did use a few install glitches but they also were resolved with a bit of effort. E-mail support was competent and knowledgeable with next-day response time. A few ideas: SUSE prefers GNOME however, if you choose KDE, be sure to put in kppp and employ that, not kinternet for dialup. Also make sure you check that display resolution is recognized properly during installation if not adjust it accordingly.

Pros: Superb interface, a breeze to use, full featured distro with more than 2000 programs, great Yast key pad, excellent hardware support and safety measures.
Cons: A slight memory hog, 512mb memory recommended. Partition utility, though easy to utilize, would gain from a facelift.
I have used Suse Pro within the last couple of years along with their latest version can be a gem. Sure it costs a little more but what you can get is the most effective Linux distro available. Very secure, Novell will provide you with continous security updates. Excellent media support.

Well where a concern for usability goes SuSE is the greatest Linux distro. To my taste it's much better than Red-Hat. But obtaining the distro it truly is only an initial! It is quite cool OS and you'll learn much regarding it. It is practical to obtain some general UNIX skills.
SuSE can be quite user friendly and also updated. It is easy to work with and that is incredibly important to me it's FUN to work with. Enjoy it.

I downloaded SuSE Linux 9.3 from your SuSE mirror and installed it earlier this week. I have dealt with a lot of Linux distributions in past times, recently Mandrake 10.1. Linux has become very promising but always somewhat tricky to make work effectively - it turned out definitely an OS for that hobbyist who enjoyed battling it to obtain things to work. SuSE Linux 9.3 changes all of that. I have dubbed it the it really works Linux distro. EVERYTHING I have tried simply works. Printers, webcams, external hard disks, USB memory EVERYTHING simply works, no muss, no fuss. It is often a truly amazing experience. SuSE 9.1 pro was great which prompted Me to look at SuSE 9.3 pro.
I was surprised to learn most on the standard features within the command prompt were taken out by Novell.
apache, presenting apache2 which not a soul uses

I am a seasoned Linux developer, then I have played around with lots of distros, including Debian and Red Hat. After using SuSE for the while, I quickly learned that it really is by far the very best distro that exists. If your needing to ditch Windows, and dont want to spring for just a Mac, this is exactly what you need. It was easier to put in then Windows and includes just about every normal application you'd probably ever need. Office, email, web, instant messaging, music, even speaks to iPods and Palm Pilots right out on the box. It includes DVDs and CDs both. It also is sold with two great large manuals, a Users Manual along with a Administrators Manual. Not even Apple includes manuals genuinely any more.
You can set it up right in conjunction with Windows, directly on the same harddrive. It will automatically shrink your Windows partition, add SuSE in their own partition, and buy a boot loader when it is possible to pick which OS you need to run if you turn on your personal machine.
