This is my knowledge about this newest edition of Peter Stearns Encyclopedia of World History.
The Encyclopedias entries, which run from prehistoric to contemporary times, are really detailed, summarizing each periods intellectual, economic, political, social, religious, and military history. They also include features not within typical historical overviews. One of my top picks is Global Interaction Networks, an area that ties together causal interactions between different parts from the world at different historical periods. The Global Interaction Networks for Europe, 1479-1675, for instance, features mini-essays on emerging world economies, exchange of brand new agricultural products for example maize and potatoes discovered from the New World, and worldwide epidemics.
In this edition with the Encyclopedia, theres also an accompanying CD which offers, among other things, an excellent historical atlas. Finally, the index is always to die for: over 150 pages of closely-printed text. Wonderful!
An overall reflection on the usefulness in this Encyclopedia is one neednt be considered a rocket scientist to seek out it useful. A high school student can make money from it just as much as a graduate student or history professor. William Langers original daunting task - use a single volume encyclopedia that can be the standard reference volume for historians - was admirably fulfilled in past editions. This sixth edition, with Peter Stearn with his fantastic team of scholars of unquestioned authority, continues the tradition. For the layman, this book comes with a remarkable brevity and depth. Often inside two or three pages entire significant periods or trends are covered thoroughly. There are rare factual errors, along with the case with any encyclopedic work, but this new edition still delivers one of the most exhaustive reference with all the least errors. For those who love dates and places, people and trends, it is an invaluable reference. For those who hate such details but must ensure that is stays around for work or school, it is still the very best single volume encyclopedia available. The CD-ROM is painless to set up. The integration into MS Word is just mildly quirky - for the majority of terms the reference information appears within seconds and it is reasonably relevant. David R. The 1972 Langer was THE standard reference for history students, as I ws for six many years of graduate school. It bailed me out numerous times. It parallels the value on the CRC for chemistry students or OED for scholars on the English language. This splendid revision and updating belongs from the collection of anyone wanting an expedient, convenient mention of all phases of history. It has splendid essays that formulate the basics in several fields, like art, math, science, and culture. It should not become the last word using a topic, which you'll get from poking through, or visitng check your local library. The CD-ROM is often a dream, as well as the maps printed out fine, but they are just a summary of say, the partition of Africa. As for Lindbergh, whole body was perpetuated from your 1972 book, but that will not detract through the overwhelmingly excellent job. Any general reference work that cites my obscure dissertation hero, even thought it can be spelled within the English and never the Polish style, is remarkable!

Not with, however for looking up details while reading other materials or quick confirmation of background information that comes up in discussion or newspaper/magazine articles and even historical details encountered in literature. There is hardly any detail, but every little thing gets a mention which enable it to be put in context of other world events. I am on my small third edition and couldn't survive without it on my own reference shelf.

This book was incredibly detailed. If you desire a over time reference, this really is for you. However, we needed children general history encyclepedia this also wasnt that. Also, i thought this was organized through the year rather than by major events or people. This may certainly be a plus for most but has not been what we needed.

The neat thing about this book may be the CD that provide it. Anytime I run into someone something like that I do not know much about, I just type it in and find all related entries. Very quick and smooth - like wikipedia but additional thorough and reliable. There are reportedly some inaccuracies in it, though every page stuffed with historical details, there being 1000 pages, you can likely a few mistakes, but I weren't let down until now in my use of computer. Enjoy!

This volume can be quite handsome-beautifully typeset. And the illustrations are nicely done, too. However, the primary person I analyzed, Charles A. Lindbergh, revealed a blunder. At the bottom from the first column onpage 729, the entire year for CALs flight emerged as 1925, not 1927 because it should be. It is correctly noted on-page 428. Needless to say, finding a real significant error very quickly after opening the publication has made me greater than a little untrusting on the books other dates and facts. Buyer beware.
