Comparatively, this latest version I just bought is enormous. Its not significantly larger width or height, but it's almost 4 inches thick! The cover says it's got 260, 000 entries. Okay, fine, it truly is thorough, right?
Wrong. One with the abbreviations used from the entries is SMS. It took me some time to realize they mean TEXTING! Yes, on the initial page with the dictionary is ab1to, short for bientцt. And a2m1, short for demain. And it is not all, its cross-referenced on the English version from the same abbreviation! So the meaning of ab1to is CU, as with see you. On the English side is l8r and lol, to call just a couple. I am astounded. This dictionary is indeed thick not because it offers so many words, but because it is usually a combination dictionary/giggling-12-year-old-girl-on-her-junior-high-trip-to-Paris guidebook.
I think whenever they had had an appendix towards the end that listed the abbreviations multi function spot, I might manage to forgive it. But that will put the concise explaination LOL in using the real words just really strikes me as horrendously misguided.
And this isn't all. These new words were added hastily too. SMS is just not listed from the list of abbreviations-I were forced to figure out what lexicographical thing it may possibly mean. So, in French, LOL means, in English SMS, LOL. But in English, LOL means, in French, MESSAGING, LOL. I bought this book for my French class attending college. I cant recommend it strongly enough! If you are taking French in secondary school or college, be sure for getting this book; it offers helped me tremendously. The only thing I regret about buying this book is always that I didnt get it done sooner.
One great feature until this book has this feature being one from the reasons I bought it in the initial place is the use with the International Phonetic Alphabet IPA for every single word. For those who are unsure what that is certainly, that is certainly THE standard method of representing sounds, particularly between languages. I studied French in senior high school 30 years ago and hated it. Then I took four semesters inside a community college twenty years ago after learning Spanish and loved it, but had little use for that language in different daily use. However, in about to spend monthly in France next season, I decided that I should study French again. This dictionary has become a wonderful help in my studies. Although you will find better, more costly dictionaries I personally own Petit Larousse Illustre and Harper Collins French College Dictionary, this has an amazing level of information and it is so smaller than average light that it may be easily referenced the place where a large bulky dictionary will probably be left for the shelf for an impediment to reading.

I own the Spanish/English version of the book so knew what I will be getting together with the French one. Like most language dictionaries, half it has French words translated to English and half has English words translated to French. I am just entering into learning French and thus far I have not run across any words I could not find. The both halves in the dictionary will show you if a words is female or male in French, that's helpful.
One thing I like concerning this dictionary and why I bought it over others is I much like the extra grammar and verb conjugation information provided at the beginning on the French half. This wont replace an authentic grammar book, but it's nice to achieve the quick information purchasing up anything, whether deconjugating not much of a real word, I looked it down ;a verb or when wanting to conjugate one from English to French.
Overall, if you prefer a dictionary, this is just about the better ones.
