FileMaker GO can not be used to produce files But it is FREE of course!
Learning relational database theory and filemaker training really should be a serious consideration for complex solutions.
Searching related data really should be scripted carefully to counteract decrease in search performance or SQL ought to be used for an alternative.
FM Server/Server Advanced sweet-spot is 250 users. Advanced removes this cap, but good hardware and good database design becomes important. HD and RAM I/O are key, so SSDs and good RAM might help a LOT. Using multiple servers and mirroring/syncing data to distribute force is preferable for very big deployments.
File dimensions are limited to 8TB. But if you merely store 1 table within a file, server allows unlimited files 8TB is pretty a large.
FM Server has never been designed to become a web server to countless users at the same time.
Filemaker Pro mustn't be used only to be a front end with an external SQL database as a result of performance/load issues.
Unless your requirements are complex right away, the educational curve for FileMaker can be quite friendly in comparison to anything else around.
3rd party plugins allow that you go far beyond what FileMaker is often capable of. Example: web services, REST, Ajax, Ruby, Etc are common possible. You can even tie PBX phones into FileMaker.
Great community support: FileMaker Technet, FM Forums.
Other Dev Resources:,
Its a genuine relational database platform.
Good connectivity to external datasources to send and receive.
You can build very presentable user interfaces quickly.
Like any professional database system, it features a learning curve.
There are a couple of interface idiosyncrasies. For all the power it will give you, sometimes your objective seems just unrealistic.
FileMaker is a nice unique product. While its marketed for being easy to work with, it truly is imperative to incorporate some basic understanding of relational databases before starting a big project. Fortunately, there is a big community of dedicated users who will be happy to share their knowledge.
Generally very flexible plus more useable to the novice if you pick The Missing Manual for this. Highly modifiable, and they also offer decent online support in case you sign up for their FileMaker Pro forums and knowledge base.
Im running FileMaker Pro 11.0v4 on two mac minis. One runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8 as well as the other Lion 10.7. The biggest dilemma is stability. I manage 10 students using a NSF grant to database a set at Cornell. It is not a complicated database, but some fields are required for that specimens were digitizing. Each student uses their very own database and rarely has over 3000 entries. The databases are saved off-site over a server. Regardless of useage with the server or on the hard drive, I have found that FMPro 11 crashes constantly, especially at the beginning of data entry. Once a student has become entering data and has now 100 or higher entries it has a tendency to crash less. Crashes can lose approximately 20 entries at time an hours in work. Options are limited. Open Office Base isnt as powerful, Microsoft doesnt make Access for Mac, and FMPro users dont wish to hear that their favorite in support of databasing program for Mac is flawed.
FMPro 11 certainly is attractive some ways. If you are good at scripts and programming miracle traffic bot is available for you. However, basic essentials just like the ability to choose multiple records while doing so and saving your projects are missing. Those are two degrees of many. FMPro 11 autosaves constantly, but that that may be useless when the program crashes as info is lost as well as people hours.
The online FMPro 11 community is effective but loyal towards the program to some fault, being somewhat too brainy because of its own good. They are more good at answering complex program questions than assisting you to figure out why FMPro 11 doesnt provide the most basic and useful tools you could find in Access, Excel, or Base software.
The Missing Manual for FMPro 11 is incredibly useful for beginners, but doesnt solve why this method crashes a whole lot. I think it will be very useful whether or not this was more user friendly or higher intuitive towards the beginner or novice.
Experts will see this to be described as a powerful databasing tool that's highly flexible for what they have to want to produce. It offers distinctive views to govern data and produce forms, and it is nearly limitless of what you can create a database for. I have 2 stars outside of 5 because all of that may be moot should the program is really unstable it cant help but crash one or more times an hour.
It has recovery options, even so the databases will often be hopelessly corrupt, therefore the only safeguard is always to constantly backup, via copy and paste, right into a safe folder. Having a simple save as option will be incredibly useful, but becomes another illustration of a basic and useful tool that this system is lacking completely.
You needs it out, but steer clear of it crashing. Maybe youll have better luck, but dont believe in your data entry to the offer until a reliable build is done available.
Honza. You are biased with your response. Read my review more carefully. I work with an Ivy League university. The problems are true. Ive used two versions in the program over two OSs on 6 different computers for upwards of 2 years sticking with the same problem. Having a developer fix my problems is moot since a well-oiled and coded databasing system shouldnt need very much repair. All of your excuses for why the database crashes have already been troubleshot and they are not the matter here. Its a glitchy program. Also, checking out the menu to avoid wasting a copy as is also a lot distinct from control or command S. And when you might be working on 1000s of entries where time is essential, its necessary to have simple options like this. Finally, I dont need to find out why you think tools arent offered. I need the instruments. Period. As for a 99% satisfaction rating, maybe you should read the other ratings. FMPro doesn't stellar reviews and for good reason.

We are already using FMP to operate our business for since version1. It very seldom does, even so only over a single user since FM9. It auto-saves any time you click outside of a record, so the current entry is lost put a commit button directly into do a quick manual save as required. The server makes backups every half-hour of my most critical data, and so the most lost could be 30 minutes at work. I have 14 users running off 1 mac mini server. There are 34 databases, with multiple tables, the principal database having over 200 layouts, 21 tables well as over 1200 fields. I have not rewritten the coding nearly as almost as much as I should resulting in the patchwork throughout the years with many inefficiencies as there are newer good ways built-in to your program that there utilized to be and work arounds not needed. All this as well as the program keeps getting more stable over the updates.

We are actually running on 11.0v4 it really is our clients until recently v12 now. We have encountered none from the issues you describe. We are running on iMacs. Our largest client is usually a pension fund. They manage a monthly 7 million payroll. Payroll operates locally for 5 hours without an individual issue. None of our own clients have the matter you describe. You should investigate database corruption. Rebuild the schema on your own, export data, check exported data, then reimport it into a whole new clean uncorrupted file. Continuing to work with databases that you've crashed in will still only make the problem worse. Look deeper for printer driver conflicts or any other software conflicts that is causing the instability inside the OS. Try carrying out a clean wipe the drive OS install and install FileMaker Pro and test that alone. FYI: Try using FilemakerPro client like a mini server. It supports as much as 9 network clients and can prevent corruption and data loss because of crashes over a client machine.

When a mainstream software this way crashes constantly like inside your case, then it's certainly due with a local issue as part of your environment, otherwise they wouldnt have an incredible number of happy customers.
From my experience, 99% of crashes of FileMaker Pro originate from either employing a corrupt database or perhaps unstable plug-in, or even a corrupt OS, or damaged file system.
I believe that any FileMaker Certified developer and plenty of non-certified also is able to fix your issue and earn your system stable and reliable.
BTW, FileMaker Pro has a Save a Copy As item from the File menu. It just isn't enabled when connecting to some remote database for obvious security reasons.
Yes, I am a loyal member with the community, but I don't have problem assisting you to figure out why FMPro 11 doesnt provide you with the most basic and useful tools you can find in Access, Excel, or Base software.
If i hear you ask me about any specific feature or tool, I can explain you why I think it is just not offered in FileMaker Pro 11.
Full featured, web integration, simplicity of programability, flexibility in layout and robust data protection.
Past updates make some earlier versions incompatible or required much reprogramming. Hopefully, this can not be the case from the future.
For the little business user. Bento is usually to stripped down, Filemaker is always to complicated

So what might you recommend?
Ridiculously user friendly and format, perfect for fast and dirty database programming, which enables it to also be scaled up for robust bigger systems, or issued as runtime through Filemaker advanced
Slow! On most databases on modern computers put notice this. However, the code will not be compact or optimised to have an enterprise level solution. Migration to MySQL etc is data-only.
Most databases nowadays are Excel spreadsheets - - a properly risky strategy for any data of over passing importance. Filemaker is vastly stronger and functional, and simply marginally less obvious. It has a quite high degree of treatments for forms and relations, likewise as strong calculations and also a serviceable scripting system. Filemaker did hard to build enterprise versions than it, using Filemaker Server. Although this can be a robust solution, the interest rate doesnt match high-end enterprise solutions, however the costs are a good deal lower. Vastly better than Access for most applications, and makes construction of an database as part of an project solution a fairly easy step, which often can itself save months on the job and specification. However, you will need to take your individual steps to make sure data robustness, because anything can connect with anything simplicity of use can readily produce results that are unexpected ie, illogical.
Not had any problems installing any version.
Updater Doesn t Work! Over priced application
The updater doesnt work, it gives a mistake message telling it can easily not locate a valid copy of FileMaker Pro, though I have it installed. Too expensive to purchase.
This a terrific application and I are capable of doing a lot by using it, but I never had the chance to get it, I just tried the trial version, Its much too expensive.

This isn't a challenge with the updater, it is often a problem with your OSX spotlight index. Your spotlight index is most likely damaged. Download Onyx and then use it to remove/rebuild your spotlight index to make sure you reboot. This should fix your trouble.
